I was trying to tell a friend this yesterday. She was of the opinion that it ought to be okay to call it something other than a marriage, and leave that term for heterosexual couples. I pointed out all the ways, legally and socially, that it just comes across as "you people are not good enough for what we have, ever." Hell, I'm straight and never want to be married, and I understand that much.
