I find this all damned amusing - esp. after so many lj'ers had a proverbial 'shitfit' when he was selected.

You know, even in my late teens, it wasn't too much of a stretch for me to realize that: there is no reason the theory of evolution could not simply be seen as "God's" method of creation; or that the 'big bang' theory really doesn't contradict god saying "let there be light". I don't see the need for the hatred of science I was raised with.

Funny. I told my children that years ago when we lived in the 'Baptist Belt'.

There was a shitfit when Cardinal Poupard was selected for the Council in April? Or do you mean Pope Benedict XVI?

Though I had originally meant the Pope - it is doubtful that such a statement would not be released by Cardinal at the Vatican unless supported by the Pope himself.

The belief I had as a young man to bring it all together was this--even if you build a house, and you made every part, even if you were strong enough to walk through the wall to leave the house, you can't because the house would fall down after you. So even though it's your house and you built it, you still have to stick doors and windows in it for it to work. It still needs to conform to the laws that allow a house to stand.

If God built the universe, would he not use the tools that allow the universe to work? Evolution may have just been the tool he used to get to us. Maybe God's breath guided the lightening bolt to hit the appropriate puddle of primordial sludge that eventually became life. the scarey thought was maybe we aren't what he's working towards--maybe something better is still coming.

I believe about what you do, but I also believe that He has also given us the tools to become something better. It's up to us to accomplish it! And I don't mean in terms of technology or wealth or power.

I was raised Roman Catholic, and that latest from the Vatican is exactly what I was taught in CCD back in the '70s and '80s. Sure, they smacked Galileo upside the head and weren't too fond of Darwin, but the Mother Church got over those episodes.

I'm not sure if it were my Catholic upbringing (i was in and out of churches and denominations so much as a kid it was hard to get a hang of what a particular religious group actually taught, not that my mum seemed to give a damn about the logic of the actual teachings, anyway, so long as there were nice people and good music, which I suppose is understandable in a way if we're talking about your local community center but I really don't think people's beliefs in god should be determined by which church has better guitar music. But that's neither here nor there.)

at any rate, between being a highly religious child and a reasonably scientific one, the bible and science never seemed all that incompatable to me. the bible never says that god created individual species, it says that he commanded the earth, starting with the waters, to bring forth life. and of course, when god speaks, we get lightning, right? Hollywood's taught us that. So god speaks, lightning strikes the oceans, fish pop out. Then the rest of the animals arive in just about the same order evolution tells us they would.

nah, it's this adam's rib shit that's totall crap.
