Dear Borders next to Really Large Airport Near Ocean In My Neighborhood:

You suck.

No, really. Like whoa.

Like you have more square footage than the Los Angeles Colliseum and only three warm bodies to stock, check and work registers. I checked. They're awesome. Your staffing policies, not so much.

Your store was a total wreck the Edmund Fitzgerald would envy. Unless you were a YA vampire novel and everything was fine. (What, does Little, Brown and Company hire its own merchandisers when you guys won't?) Oh dear GHADS, I hate vampire novels. I'm rapidly losing even patience with genre. GUESS why.

People were buying books. LOTS of them. I watched. Woulda been one of them, turkeys. *flips finger* Not happening again anytime soon.

Going home to Torrance. Thank you for costing me an entire HOUR I could have been HOME for nothing.

*throws rotten tomatoes*

No, they had copies of Rosemary & Rue, they just had no EARTHLY IDEA where they were. And I couldn't even complain - I could see why. I felt sorry for them.

I was PISSED at losing an entire hour in a wild fae chase. If I had wanted another sucker of a book, I'd have been fine! But noooOOOOOOooo - I want something else!

Ugh.

Dear Amazon:

Thank you so much for having my back when I boast of my B2B association with your company, and how you never fail to amaze me with your JIT inventory skills.

And for my copy of Rosemary & Rue in my mailbox waiting for me when I got home, ahead of the 9/4 delivery you promised me.

Mwah. You may have been birthed from the bowels of Wal-Mart, but I love you anyway.

*tosses jasmine*

Keep in mind, I couldn't start reading until kid was asleep - oh, I think about 8:30 PM or so.

And I put myself to bed by 11:00, most nights the target is 10:00 PM. I think I hit somewhere between those two last night.

201 pages, yo. And my self-discipline is mighty.

I'm utterly delighted. This is Seanan's work polished to a high gloss and it's wonderful.

More comprehensive reviews later. Promise. Maybe even a FST.

*snortle*

I seem to be buying more and more stuff online for that very reason.

Borders never has what I want. And I hate getting things delivered from Amazon because I can't schedule when UPS comes to my apartment building...

Go B & N.

Borders is never fully staffed, clean, or friendly. For that kind of service, I pull into an independent bookstore.

I still think Borders is better than Barnes and Noble though, but I used to work in a large independent store, and am fully aware of the nasty trade practices these large corporate chains use. As for Amazon, they're ok, but still rather overrated. I won't go into my reasons for thinking that though.

If you go with cheap shipping from Amazon, a lot of things are now being delivered by USPS, fyi.
