But after vampires? The only other 'thing' that really irks me that I have to see over and over and over again in the current media?

Zombies.

No, seriously. It's vamps, zombies or nothin'.

Why yes, yes there are other things to jump out of the dark and scare the shit out of you. Really.

...and if that doesn't kick start your creative process, I don't know what will.

Quit writing what everyone else is. Gimme something new.

Werewolves are simply too close to dogs to be sexy and they can't usually say "Braaaaains." No catch phrase, no swooning teenagers, it's a wash really.

Aw, come on. Zombies are just fun!

Want to write about something scary? Write about religious zealots with money and power. And ammo.

vampires are over-romanticized. zombies were intended to be a backdrop. neither has been used properly since at least the 70s.

i'm pretty sure hollywood couldn't do a good horror story anyways.
*sudden frightening musical sting!*

Have you read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" yet?

Just to put things in proper perspective...

I tend to write about shapeshifters a lot, but I don't have stupid crypto-White-Wolf "we are the tribe of shapeshifters and are enemies of vampires!" werewolves. I have selkies. And one werewolf, with zero explanation of how she became one. She just woke up a werewolf one day. As it were. And no, she is not a nice werewolf.

No zombies either. I have an idea for a story about revenants, but they are not zombies or undead or anything else horror-movie or D&D ish. Don't get me wrong, I love D&D. But my Muse does not drink at that well; it's too crowded.

I vote for chupacabras. We don't see nearly enough goatsuckers in the media today.
