Why I always answer the phone.
Oct. 16th, 2009 11:15 amBecause I've had enough people tell me 'call me anytime' and when I do, I leave voicemail and that's the end of the social contact.
I also have a good memory. If you want to leave a lasting impression - don't return calls after you've promised me the moon, m'kay?
Marian Kelly brought me along too well - she once told me every contact you have with someone carries the possibility that it will be the last time you will ever talk to them. Why would you leave them with anything less than your best impression?
I can certainly understand a high person to you ratio - and depending on your chosen profession, that ratio can get stupidly high and unmanageable alone. I don't ask to be given one to one if it's not warranted. C'mon. This isn't being greedy. My time is worth something too.
Just acknowledge the call and deal with what I contacted you about. Yanno. You want to make me happy all over and love you forever, return the call. Send a form letter, spam or smoke signals - I don't care.
You let me know you heard me, even if you spell it out in Peeps, that's better than just about anything.
You contact me, I'll always take the call. It's the least I can do.
