http://ift.tt/2b0001vTHIS! This is some of the most wonderful, amazing news I’ve seen in a long, long time! The idea that the government EVER allowed people to make money off of mass incarceration is abhorrent and grotesque. Truly evil. This is an absolutely basic step towards human decency and justice in America.
There are a lot of factors that doubtless went into making this change a reality, but two in particular leap to mind at the moment: Orange is the New Black and the amount of attention the Sanders campaign put on the issue. OITNB for dramatizing so vividly how inescapably evil for profit prisons are, for making that evil a reality that millions of Americans with no personal connections to the imprisoned (or empathy for faceless prisoners) can picture and rightly abhor. And Sanders and his volunteers for working to harness public outrage, raise awareness, and work within the government, making actual change seem possible.
I’m grateful to all the activists who have devoted their time and talents to making this righteous change into a reality.
I’m not crying. You’re crying.
Justice Department bending towards justice.
As Martin Luther King Jr said, ““The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”
If I could hug this, I would. Huge.
