Those “tips” going around are lies to suppress minorities and young voters.

Find your polling place.

Check your local wait times in your county or parish–Some states have longer wait times than others.  Some have also cut polling places to make longer wait times for minorities. Making an informed plan can help you successfully budget time to vote.

Make sure your registration has not been purged.  That has been happening too.

Tell everyone.

Unless you are sending in an absentee ballot BY SNAIL MAIL, you must go to your polling place IN PERSON to vote.

Also, if you are in line at closing time, you can still vote! Do not leave the line if someone tells you the polls are closed. The lines may be long where you go to vote. STAY IN LINE!

31 states require some form of ID. Please look up what your state requires.

Nobody can tell you to leave but a poll worker. Some Trump supporters are going to try to bully POC– ignore everybody but poll workers and report harassment.

US citizens, if you are registered to vote or can register at the polls, and anyone tries to undermine your right to vote call 866-OURVOTE or the DOJ Voting Rights Hotline, 800-253-3931
And remember, if you are in line before a polling station closes, they MUST let you vote, no matter how long the line is.

DO NOT leave. Call 866OURVOTE if it’s poll-closing time and you are still in line. Tell Twitter if there are lines over 60 minutes any time today - share your polling station, county and state with ELECTIONLAND

Rock your vote. The world is counting on us.

John Coltrane: the Last Appearance

This article is a fascinating account of what appears to have been John Coltrane’s last public appearance on May 7, 1967 as part of Baltimore’s Left Bank Jazz Society’s Sunday concerts. Accounts differ but it appears that Algie DeWitt was added on bata drum and Alice Coltrane was home taking care of Oran, their newborn. DeWitt, incidentally had been on Coltrane’s final New York appearance a week earlier, recently issued as The Olatunji Concert and was on Coltrane’s last recording session ten days later (the master tapes of which are lost).

“It makes you want to turn off the news. It makes you want to unplug the internet. Or just look at cat GIFs. Believe me, I get it, in the last few weeks, I’ve watched a lot of cats do a lot of weird and interesting things. But we have a job to do and it’ll be good for people and for cats.”

By the way, this is real. She actually said this. On the record.

If this doesn’t make you want to vote for her, I don’t know what will.

WB Animation notes that more details, including where the new episodes will air and a premiere date, will be revealed later, but production is now beginning on the third season, which promises “new twists, turns and dangerous new threats for the team, but most importantly, the opportunity for fans to finally continue the adventures of some of their favorite Super Heroes.”

As you may already know, Donald Trump is enlisting poll watchers to monitor the Nov. 8th election. He has ordered them to look out for suspicious looking voters and ensure people aren’t voting over and over. Let me make this clear: many people, specifically Black and brown voters, are going to be singled out. People are going to be targeted on discriminatory grounds. Historically poll watchers have targeted people of color and it’s going to be no different this year, likely even worse.

In the past poll watchers have worked to intimidate voters, outright lie to them, and interfering with the process enough to cause chaos and discourage people from remaining in long lines. Poll watchers are permitted to challenge citizens in nearly every state and each state varies in terms of how much power they get. Some states require *very* little justification for challenging a voter, some require specific grounds, while others just let anyone be challenged based off of “suspicion.” If you are challenged immediately ask on what grounds, how they are backing those claims up, and what your state’s procedures regarding voter challenges.

So what happens if you are being challenged at the polls? Some states will ask you questions, have you sign an affidavit, force you to provide multiple forms of identification proving who you are and/or your current address, find another voter who can vouch for your identity, fill out a provisional ballot that will be verified later, or a mixture of these. Note: there is no assurance that your provisional ballot will be counted. Do not accept one of these without a fight, insist on a real ballot.

If you are being unfairly targeted there will also be nonpartisan poll watchers from civil rights committees there to help. They are there to help voters who are encountering problems and will have phone hotlines available as well. Here is their website with the phone numbers you can call, multiple language options available. These poll challenges are often done to disrupt the voting process more than anything, to discourage you from casting a vote by wasting your time. Know your rights and know how you can prepare yourself if this happens.

Finally, if you want to avoid this hassle all together you still have time to sign up for a mail-in ballot. All state’s deadlines are soon (the last couple days of Oct. or the first couple days of Nov.) so sign up ASAP. I’d also suggest clicking here which helps you find out more information about your state’s voting requirements, how to vote, and where to vote near you. Just use the drop down menu and find your state for more information. And even if you are registered to vote I would recommend clicking on the link under “Check if you’re registered to vote.” There were a lot of problems regarding that matter in my state so it’s good to check.

FYI poll watchers MUST wear their poll watcher identification badge given to them by the Supervisor of Elections. Don’t answer or provide information to those without a badge.

An Ohio Trump supporter actually said to Boston Globe reporters that

“I’ll look for … well, it’s called racial profiling. Mexicans. Syrians. People who can’t speak American,” he said. “I’m going to go right up behind them. I’ll do everything legally. I want to see if they are accountable. I’m not going to do anything illegal. I’m going to make them a little bit nervous.”

Be safe, and report this kind of intimidation.

Yes exactly I’ve read that article and seen others that have had poll watchers saying similar things. Everyone can stop sending me messages telling me that these actions are illegal. I KNOW they are illegal, that does not stop people from doing it. That hasn’t stopped them in the past and it won’t stop them on election day.

Not only that but Trump isn’t just calling for official poll watchers, he’s telling his followers in general to look out for suspicious looking people. Like… I don’t feel I should have to explain what is going to likely happen here.

And by the way, there are currently some states trying to make it EASIER to challenge voters. For example, some states have been attempting to pass a bill that would allow residents to be certified as watchers anywhere in the state. Current law allows them to watch polls only in the county they live, but this would give them free range.

Anyways my main point is to inform people what might happen to them at the polls and what to look out for so you don’t have your rights violated. Again  immediately ask on what grounds you are being questioned for, how they are backing those claims up, and what your state’s procedures are regarding voter challenges. Don’t give out information to people without badges. Like quit sending me “OMG this is NOT what poll watchers do, we’re trying to help,” and realize that there are people who are outright saying they are going to harass and intimidate minority voters.

Once again, voter intimidation will definitely be happening on tuesday and it’s already been happening at early voting polling places. Report whatever you see happening and be wary of deceptive election practices such as:

Being threatened with arrests if you are voting and have unpaid child support, unpaid parking tickets, etc.

Receive phone calls, particularly robocalls telling you that you no longer need to vote in your area.

Receiving fliers, calls, or being told that you actually vote the next day. Some might say “republicans vote today, democrats vote tomorrow,” or something similar.

Being told you can vote online via social media and hashtags.

Tactics like these are all lies and are used to discourage people from voting, this is particularly prevalent in minority areas.

If you experience any of these problems then report it or call 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) - this is an election protection coalition.

Also if you would like more details about your state’s ID requirements, where to go, what time you can go vote, and other information then click here and find your state for more info.

This is not the usual content of my blog, but this is incredibly important information for my American followers to have.

Felt like this needed to reblog this here to reach more people; this is not my usual content either, but just as stated above, this is so so important.

Friend of mine already weighed in from Moreno Valley, CA.  Somebody physically restrained her trying to get her to ‘take this flyer’ - folks, she’s blind.  When he grabbed her, and somebody Spanish-speaking came to her rescue, it took calling the police and having the guy dragged off in handcuffs to end the issue.

Yay, Riverside County.
