Dude, cross check this one for me.

Are they serious?

"The First Holy Communion made by 8-year-old borough resident Haley Waldman in April is considered invalid in the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church since the Holy Eucharist she received did not contain any wheat. The young girl's mother, Liz Waldman, said this week she had just recently learned of the ruling made by the church.

I'm not catholic. Stuff like this literalism is a very good way to convince me that's a good thing.

The Jesus that I read about when I attended Catholic School would have been appalled by this ridiculous ruling.

Yup. It's true. Under church canon law, there has to be a certain amount of wheat gluten in the host in order for it to be considered "bread". I actually known a community of Benedictine contemplative nuns who make a low wheat gluten hosts that was approved by the Vatican last year.

Check it out @ www.benedictinesisters.org.

Look on the positive side for young Haley. She gets another new dress, another party and more presents, because the church screwed up.

Downside is, she'll actually have to wear that dress and shoes all day again.

And yet they still haven't excommunicated those Red Lobster heretics?

What inconsistent bastards!

If you're going to rebuke a child, condemn ALL the sinners and just get it over with already!

A kid I worked with at church camp had this same disorder, and was given substitute wafers. (Then again, it was a godless hippie fag-loving Episcopalian camp...)

Genetic dietary disorders must come from SIN

Why didn't they offer the girl the option of taking the host in her hands, holding it for a second in reverance and then handing it back to the priest, or even to another Catholic?

This is similar to what you do when you are receiving communion in both types, as host and wine. If you do not wish to drink the wine, but you wish to participate in the ceremony, you take the cup in your hands, hold it in front of you for a moment and hand it back.

Sometimes I wonder what the heck is going on sometimes.

But I won't.

Wow...a whole new meaning for fucked up.

I mean, if they're going to be literalists about it, they'd be ripping up bread and giving it out rather than communion wafers. And I'm pretty sure it was okay for the apostles to chew the bread too.

Do they realize they've so much as said that non-alcoholic "wine" is invalid as well, since it was bread and wine, not bread and grape juice. And if you're deathly allergic to grape juice? Well, that's really not our problem.

Although this isn't why I left the Catholic church as a teenager, it's a fine reason to stay away.

My friend Matt has celiac. I was told that the wheat stuff actually eats away at the little hairy things in your intestines that suck nutrients or whatever out of food. So if you keep eating wheat, you can eventually starve to death despite eating food. And that is why I will grab bready things out of his hands before he eats 'em.

He really misses pizza.

it's hypocritical because the catholic church is supposed to teach god's law - the essence of the bible, god's law, is essentially do unto others, worships him, and avoid evil. it's about LOVE. how the hell are you going to teach this and then turn around and DENY AN 8-YEAR-OLD GIRL her first communion because she has a medical condition that prevents her from consuming the HUMAN issued symbols?? WWJD? Jesus would have blessed her and healed her. the catholic church condems her and shreds the basis of her faith. it's ridiculous. i'm ashamed that i was ever catholic.

are you scared to reveal your identity?

That is just whacked. I was raised catholic and I have never heard of such a thing. They're just getting scarier. So frustrating. How do you explain such a thing to an 8-year-old? It's nuts.

Another loss of respect from me for the Catholic Church in particular, and organized hierachical religions in general really.

If they want to be so technical and anal, they should start expelling people for not drinking the wine- I know several people who don't want the alcohol even at church :p

This has to be even tougher to explain to the little girl than it was to explain to me why my daddy couldn't be a priest anymore when I knew he loved God so much when *I* was a tyke.

This happened here a couple years ago, too, to a little kid who was told she couldn't take rice wafers. I forget how that was settled--I think possibly the parents were thinking of going Episcopal--but I know the (then) governor offered her sympathies, as she was a gluten-sensitive Catholic.

I kinda figure that transubstatntiation working as it is, it probably shouldn't matter what the Host is made of.

I bet they forgot to tell you about the Melkites or other Eastern Rite Catholics (like my buddy the Ukrainian) who are Catholic and recognize the authority of the Holy See, but their priests get to marry and have families.

This has nothing to do with the thread....

But everything to do with your icon... the pic and the words 'zombie powder' seem familiar to me from somewhere.. is that a manga, and if so, where can I find scanlations?

Guess I can Google it too, but I prefer to ask another human, and hear what else they have to say about it and why they love it so :)

I always said "I believe in God, I don't believe in religion". And stuff like this is exactly why.

I have this image of people walking into church with shirts that say "Saved By Christ, Not By Wheat Gluten" :-)

Zombie Powder is in fact a manga, done by Kubo Tite. He currently writes a manga called Bleach, which has been a staple of the Japanese Shonen Jump since 2001, and has an anime debuting October 5th.

Here is the entire series, scanlated by Toriyama's World. If I had to describe it, it would be a mix of Trigun, a dash of Those Who Hunt Elves, and Tite's own style.

Here's another piece of artwork I did

I read threads like this, and I think “So much for that whole liberal ‘tolrance’ thing”. Bashing is okay as long as its those nasty old Catholics on the sharp end, eh?

I can't figure out what the Church is doing wrong here. Is it that we have beliefs, or that we actually believe in them?

On secomd thought, I don't care. I'm glad I'm Catholic. That way I don't have to go around acting like I know everything already.

Sad.
