Today’s yokai is a tengu—a demon in bird-like form, even though the name means “heavenly dog.” Maybe that’s because the tengu was derived from the Chinese dog-demon tiangou? Sorry if I’m not bird dogging the history of yokai enough (ba-dum-bump).

If you are looking for some insight into the collection of early 19th century yokai bestiaries we’ve digitized from Toriyama Sekien, then head over to “Toriyama Sekien’s Spooky Parade,” a guest post on our blog by co-founder of AltJapan Co., Ltd, Matt Alt. Or you could just explore the beasts on your own. This yoka was from Gazu Hyakki yagyo, v.1(1805)
