Was wondering how long it would be before this showed up -

Yeah, soon I'll really be in a place to approach this "the right way."

..

Maybe. I can think about it. I can consider it. Wouldn't that be a good way to contribute to the relief effort?

Although, after watching Daughter from Danang, it's not something I'd take lightly.

So incredibly sad. And we're just at the beginning of it all.

These families see children lost and alone and take them in.. 1000's of them. In a small impoverished country I can see that happening in a heartbeat. I've wondered since this began how the countries were going to deal with the orphans. There is no way they have the staffing or facilities to take care of all of them. The first thoughts in my head were Viet Nam or Romania. What they could be doing is promoting a fostering system, so that if (and that's a big if) the bio families turn up the children can be found. Tragedies like this create a lot of Kismet.

I find the government's attitude simply appalling, though not surprising. I can see their point, just barely, but they have enough problems right now that keeping thousands of kids in limbo while the bureaucracy grinds through the usual paperwork simply isn't part of the solution.

The only objection I have to what the families are doing is that the children *might* have family elsewhere that is still alive and looking for them or something.

seeking and giving refuge is one thing... I can understand the government's concerns, especially since I hope those kids are being treated right... otherwise, get them out of there.

I would much rather see kids with families than warehoused in an institution. but what if the kids have living relatives or some one mistreats them? This is really hard.
