More money.

Honestly, this is Los Angeles. When somebody brings Arnie Roth to lead an orchestra, you do mike checks at least - VERY LEAST - for the entire house.

If you're coming in late, the latest Dear Friends concert was last night at the Universal Amphitheater. Which obviously, has seen better days.

I think the mikes worked 40% of the time. It didn't matter who was using one.

The theater was not ventilated adequately. And the cabling for the guitars for the Black Mages was so problematic, one of the players tripped over the cables and unplugged himself going into a solo. Amusing, and he recovered quickly - but you get the drift.

Last piece of the night required the choir, the orchestra and the Black Mages to play together. It took four tries to get underway - and Uematsu was NOT impressed.

However. It was as good, musically, as the original. And look, CDs!

Oh, look. They lifted the pieces from the original soundtracks. More money. CRAP.

Arnie Roth had arranged a lovely swing number called "Swing de Chocobo" which was a lovely cross between the Chocobo theme, Glen Miller and John Williams (remember "Swing Swing Swing" from 1941 that got retreaded for the last Harry Potter film?) -

And the Black Mages. YUMMY. They've released some stuff overseas, right? I'll be right there.

The last piece was the Sephiroth theme - think Moody Blues - using the Black Mages band set, the orchestra and a choir, sandwiched in on stage right. The miking was so bad, the balance was WAAAAAY off, and you couldn't hear the choir. Nearly. But you could tell the arrangement was solid.

They announced a pretty ambitious touring schedule - and it looks like the next closest one will be in July down in San Diego. (ComicCon, no doubt.)

Technically, I've seen smoother jobs at high school concert recitals.

And I really, REALLY would like a live album. Really really.

Got home last night about midnight, fell down and dreamed of being served tea at the same table as Uematsu (who just looks like fun to be around).

Back to work!
