The belief I had as a young man to bring it all together was this--even if you build a house, and you made every part, even if you were strong enough to walk through the wall to leave the house, you can't because the house would fall down after you. So even though it's your house and you built it, you still have to stick doors and windows in it for it to work. It still needs to conform to the laws that allow a house to stand.

If God built the universe, would he not use the tools that allow the universe to work? Evolution may have just been the tool he used to get to us. Maybe God's breath guided the lightening bolt to hit the appropriate puddle of primordial sludge that eventually became life. the scarey thought was maybe we aren't what he's working towards--maybe something better is still coming.
