I'm not sure if it were my Catholic upbringing (i was in and out of churches and denominations so much as a kid it was hard to get a hang of what a particular religious group actually taught, not that my mum seemed to give a damn about the logic of the actual teachings, anyway, so long as there were nice people and good music, which I suppose is understandable in a way if we're talking about your local community center but I really don't think people's beliefs in god should be determined by which church has better guitar music. But that's neither here nor there.)

at any rate, between being a highly religious child and a reasonably scientific one, the bible and science never seemed all that incompatable to me. the bible never says that god created individual species, it says that he commanded the earth, starting with the waters, to bring forth life. and of course, when god speaks, we get lightning, right? Hollywood's taught us that. So god speaks, lightning strikes the oceans, fish pop out. Then the rest of the animals arive in just about the same order evolution tells us they would.
