One of these stopped by and perched on the railing outside my window today:

Love my window.

Now all you need to do is stamp a big, fat "O RLY?" on it.

/thinks it's stupid too

That's a hawk, not an owl. O RLY is an owl phenomenon.

Stupid random fact:
Despite their reputation for wisdom, owls perform extremely poorly on standardized "animal intelligence tests" compared to raptors, parrots, and crows.

Neat! What kind of hawk/falcon is that?

I love birds of prey.

Pretty birdie!

I toured the SF Zoo last weekend; they have some beautiful can't-be-released raptors on display. The toddler in my lap was especially impressed by "birdies" that were bigger than she was, I think. Beautiful raptors.

How lovely! I love watching raptors.

On occasion, we'll get bald eagles in the woods here. I've seen one as close as ten feet from my house (and two feet over my head).

fufaraw: mist drift upslope (owl)

The owl wranglers on the Harry Potter movies affirm that owls are pretty dumb when dealing with things humans are interested in. They're aces at regulating their population to the available prey, in raising healthy offspring and hunting successfully. The rest... well, only the humans care about the rest, really.

I've always loved raptors of any description, and told myself that kill footage on Animal Planet fed the nestlings and was necessary. Until a kestrel caught a jay in our backyard. She pinned it to the grass and mantled over it, and proceeded to pluck and eat it, live and screaming, while every songbird and crow in the neighborhood gathered in the nearby trees and shrieked invective at her. Nature red in tooth and claw is fine, till you add the soundtrack.

Red-Tailed Hawk, Buteo jamaicensis. Are you feeding him/her or did you just get lucky?

They can be tamed, you know. Next time, maybe offer him/her a treat. Who knows -- you might make a new friend!

It is quite common for me to find the red tailed hawks and golden eagles perched around Anza, where they make snacks of rabbits and quail and other less fortunate creatures. I'll have to try to capture a few pics.

Got lucky. I think this one was one of those "silly fledglings" Mercedes Lackey writes about - he landed, saw me behind the glass, freaked out and split.

We have a ton of food around for the likes of him - squirrels, mice, sparrows and the odd additional small mammal or two.

I think this is the second one I've seen at that particular perch -

My Animal Planet moment for the day.

They were endangered when I was a child, can you believe it? We never saw them.

Now, it's the horned lizards at risk.
