I'm actually Danish, which helps.

The downside is that it doesn't have the Zoos and Balboa Park that we wanted to spend some less-rushed time exploring.

But holy merde, the cost of just sleeping there bothers me. BOTHERS ME.

Don't sleep there. Sleep in Santa Maria. It's not a long drive and the motels will be much cheaper.

Go up the road to San Luis Obispo, find a nice town, go to Morro Bay for a time, take a hike in Montana de Oro. Santa Maria isn't bad either. Stay at the Motel 6 in Buellton for reasonable prices. That is where I stay, and they have data ports if you have a laptop.

My guess is that it's high season in Solvang right now. But if you can find a good deal, maybe go for Santa Barbara/Montecito (The rates should be lower in Feb). There's no Balboa park, but the botanic gardens are wonderful. Never been to the zoo, so I can't say.
