*coming up for air*
Feb. 28th, 2006 01:44 pmFolks, feel free to cut loose with the happy-ass dancing.
I heard from Mom this morning; she'd had a particularly good morning talking shop with her nephrologist this morning.
Anyone out there familiar with creatinine clearance numbers and what they mean? Good. Try this one:
She's down to a 2.2. That's walking around with the rest of us normal. This is after losing one kidney, all the obstructive issues she's had and being 81 years old. Hello.
We were looking at highs in the 6's not six months ago. That's what appropriate treatment and a supportive diet plan has done. (The diet sucks, but -)
We can discuss dialysis now - sure we can. We're not looking at actually having to do it today.
Cardiac status? Dead stable, and no diuretics needed. There's no CHF left. Hello.
Mom says she won't be doing any dance contests - and she gets fatigued at the end of the day - but she sounds normal, even happy and perky on the phone.
So help me, it's easy to say the fatigue is part of getting older - at least in Mom's case, it's only an indicator that something needs attention.
That just about compensates for the huge sucking sound that is work this week. Just. About.

Date: 2006-03-01 01:35 am (UTC)Mucho kudos to your mom. Has she been on PD or HD? I worked in a PD unit during college and even though I was only the secretary, I felt great happiness and satisfaction when patients improved. I hope that she continues on this path.

Date: 2006-03-01 02:21 am (UTC)And no diuretics means they can take it a little easier on her liver *and* kidney now.
Frequently numbers going wonky means something wrong that maybe could be fixed, not just something to ignore as "being old", thank you!!

Date: 2006-03-01 06:21 pm (UTC)Thanks for the kudos - Mom is a very dilligent person (that Aries/Taurus cusp she is), it's nice to see her get some strokes for all her hard work.
