Another passing to note -

kyburgLately, Spice has taken to getting out of the yard. Or demanding she be inside with us, whenever we are home.
Tonight, after I had blocked all the exits this morning, she got past them and got out.
And was almost instantly struck and killed by oncoming traffic. She was 14 years old.
Right now, I'm numb. She hadn't been the kind of dog that wandered, or was determined to get out - and on the off chance, she had? She'd never wandered on into the street, let alone out towards Torrance Blvd, which can be over 45 MPH.
I don't think she knew what hit her. Literally, it was over that fast.
I can take some comfort in knowing her end was quick, and as painless as dying instantly can be. I'm having her cremated, and we'll decide on what else we'll do after that. She was 14 - and the future wasn't going to get much more rosy before the envitable effects of her age set in. Frankly, I'm wondering if the recent behavior changes weren't some indication of something deeper at this point.
Have a kind thought for Jim right now. She was a dear friend to him, and this is the first pet he's ever lost like this. (Yeah, he grew up with out any pets whatsoever - she was his first.)
