In my opinion, the RNC wants someone who will do what they are told to by the party. The DNC wants someone who can lead them by example.

Hence, you get Palin for the RNC. And Obama fills stadiums for the DNC.

You'll have to decide if you think the human condition isn't improveable, so who cares who's ass warms the throne, they're all alike....or if the human condition should be a work in progress, and we should work harder to improve it.

Me?

Obama hit the stage...and everything just got better. He didn't tell me not to worry. He told me what needs to be done and that someone - namely, him - was interested, motivated and WANTED to do something about it.

I've heard all about Palin, without hearing a word about her speech. Very sad. Do I try to get a listen, read a transcript for fairness sake?

Or do I just come to the conclusion that she'd be a pretty face and a good girl who knows her place, does what she's told, when she's told to do it?

I said I'd vote for a woman - if the right woman ran.

You might consider listening to the speech, but maybe play the RNC drinking game first. No, she didn't talk about 9/11, so much, but you can make up rules.

It was an infuriating speech, except when it was so repetitive and dull that I distracted myself with Twilight mockeries. But she is definitely the voice of the "Righteous Right," the voice now backed by Phelps and his groupies. She isn't inarticulate- but very hypocritical. And, in the interest of knowing your enemy, dangerous, should McCain somehow win this election in November. I have been running strategies in my head, and at first didn't make sense why JohnnyMac picked her, but I think I understand now. This woman, while not as experienced as the others, and definitely as corrupt (Troopergate?), strikes the hearts of a huge core base in the GOP, that the DEMs had best not underestimate.

Remember, know your enemy (or friend, whatever). I recommend grabbing the speech. It says a LOT about her that the media's reporting did not.

ETA: She's not loveable like Huckabee either. There's no charisma there, but just as dangerous.

I personally thought it was a very good speech. She hit all the main points that are important... to Republicans. But then what do I know, I think she has more experience than Obama. XD

I suggest not to worry about it, since you are decidedly for Obama, it's not going to change your vote regardless what she says.

As for speech writers, Obama has those too, that's nothing new.

I really disliked a lot of what she said last night, but I think this is an oversimplification of what Palin's about - she's not there because she's a mindless prop, she's there because she's an exemplary conservative evangelical who hits just the right buttons for other conservative Christians, and maybe (but probably not) has some crossover appeal for independents.

That being the case, she's a long way from being picked as a running mate because of identity considerations - like everybody as far back as John Adams and the New England vote, she does the job she's asked to do, and then takes whatever opportunities she can on top of that.

That said, we're in deep, deep trouble as a country if this country is still willing to elect a folksy-seeming Republican who spits out just the right culture war slogans.

She doesn't strike me as a good girl who does what she's told, actually. She strikes me as an evangelical culture-warrior who would outlaw abortion and prohibit the teaching of evolution.

More than anything, her speech proved her to be a partisan attack dog and serial liar. There was no substance to it - just a brief biography and shameless digs at Obama for being a "community organizer" and self-righteous bragging about being mayor of a town of 9000 and governor of a backwater state.

I just want to ask you to stop for a minute. Just for a minute. Cuz you need a hug. *HUG* It has been brought to my attention (by your wonderful husband) that you're having the week from hell. Well so am I. So I'm offering you a virtual glass of wine (Montcadi Cava Rose, specifically), and some cheese and chocolate, and my ear. Also, if you need (and can take) a spa day in the next few weeks (I start school on the 25th of September), I'm available. Or we could have a picnic on the lawn at CSU Pomona, and buy some alum sweaters. Then I could get you some cheese and chocolate and wine in person.

Sarah Palin's speech highlighted some of the more annoying aspects of an individual involved in a pointless flamewar. Oh, she didn't invoke Godwin (quite--she DID, however, substitute the equivalent by hitting references to 9/11 quite a bit), but she was shrill, sardonic, mocking, loaded to the gills with ad hominem...She had no real argument, so she invoked sarcasm and personal attack as those with no argument often do.

She was a living, breathing IRL troll.

I wasted my time listening to it--I wouldn't suggest you do the same. You can get the same thing any old time you flip on the computer.
