Phelps helps...

In this case, Phelps helped raise $5000 for AIDS awareness and the local LGBTA by coming to protest here at UMD because we had a production of Laramie Project. As a way to peacefully counter their protests, the school (or some organization, forgot which ones) had people in angel costumes across the street accpeting donations - and called out the amount they raised every time someone gave them money. Capitalizing on someone's hatred for a good cause...much more productive than anything I'd have ever done. It was a pretty peaceful weekend overall, and while Phelps got some attention in the studnet newspaper (archives at http://www.diamondbackonline.com), he was pretty much seen as a joke the entire time.

Of course what was REALLY funny was the episode of The Awful Truth or TV Nation (forgot which one) with the Sodomobile that went to Phelps's church (where 64 of the 70some members are in his family)...gotta love Michael Moore.

A women's clinic in downstate Illinois does the same thing. Since they are one of the only abortion providers in the area, they are really vulnerable to pickets. So on days they know they'll be getting slammed (Mother's Day, Roe v. Wade anniversary, etc.) they have a Pledge-a-Picket. People all over pledge so much money per protestor who shows up, and then they let the picketers know how much they've helped raise by being there. Life hands you lemons, etc.

I just don't get the idea of "God hates". Period.

I still think he'll be in for a big surprise when it's his turn to head on to the hereafter. (Gee, what's this handbasket doing here?)
