Well, I oughta.

Cat is holding her own - took her in for a quick check last night, and while she's alert and had gained 1/2 an ounce (that's long for not continuing to lose ground/weight), not out of the woods by a longshot.

Still secluding her. Still forcing drugs and groceries down her neck. Still evil.

Kid continues to be adorable and wee - we're waiting on the sonogram results to endocrinologist on what to do next, medically. Latest stupidity was a pediatrician at Kaiser wants the antibiotic regimen done on him because of the positive PPD (tuberculosis) as a precaution. Stupidity was in the pharmacy when they prescribed it in a liquid with such a low density that a dose for 30 pound toddler was four tablespoons of mostly sorbitol.

Two teaspoons is enough to get a completely impacted peritoneal dialysis patient fecally incontinent. Trust me on this - so, guess what.

Oh my oh me, I won't be that trusting again. They'd never - oh yes they did.

And this regimen is nine months long. It had better be something better tolerated, that's all I gotta say. Welcome to our first parental refusal of treatment. You guys had better get with it - Jim's got point on this one, it being Kaiser, but I've as much ordered him to put me on the line if they so much as bat one eyelash at the request for something useful. I'll RUIN them.

My bronchitis still present, but improving slowly by the day. By the time the cat and that is resolved, I might wonder what to do with the spare time I'll have. *hack*

Mother's Day is next month, and I'm already getting bombarded. UH. Just about everything is suggesting the best celebration is leaving my kid with a sitter and doing something "adult." This...is not making a lot of sense. Since it falls on a day that Jim works, I'm thinking lunch date with my kid at Shinsengumi ramen. I won't turn down a date with a place that will allow me a soak in a hot tub and a massage, however. I'd need a couple of hours, tops. But celebrating Mother's Day by not being a mother just does not compute.

I'm thinking about lighting a couple of candles, though - perhaps I'll pop by the cathedral. One for his first mother, one for his foster mother. *nods*

Speaking of mothers, mine is having her 85th birthday today. Did the pajamagram thing - for Mother's Day? Hmmm. Think I'll send flower bulbs for her garden - she's perky and feeling pretty good, all things considered and is out having lunch with a friend today. Can't ask for more.

My mom always appreciates bulbs.

Glad you're breathing a little easier, and best wishes to kitty.

Four tablespoons of sorbitol... OMG gack! I do wonder what these folks are getting paid to do all day sometimes; I hear it's mostly paperwork.

It's too bad you don't have a Japanese bathhouse there AFAIK - ours even has co-ed days if you wear swimsuits, and I forget what the kid policy is. I think ramen for lunch, Jim takes kid somewhere fun while you soaked and had a massage, followed by afternoon adventures and more noodles for dinner in Japantown, sounds like an awesome Mother's Day. Especially with the candles idea.

I think that Mother's Day was designed as a way to say "thank you" to moms, and the best way to do that was often to let Mom have a break from her hard work. But at least one family I know celebrates it with a big fancy brunch at a local hotel so all the moms can see their kids and grandkids, followed by grandmas getting a day with the grandkids and the moms getting their hair done while the menfolk barbecue dinner. More of a family reunion, really.

What I like to for mother's day is a take a hike with my son and husband. Since just about all fairs/festivals etc take mother's day off, it's one the few things we can ALL do.

Good luck with Xander's medicine and the cat.

Happy Birthday to your Mom!

I suspect, though, that after a few years, you might really enjoy some "only me" time again. :-)

What do you mean by "completely impacted" for a peritoneal dialysis patient?

And why does sorbitol seem to cause incontinence? Because of its laxative quality? Does it only seem to do that to someone who is on peritoneal dialysis or on everyone?

You wrote: "my kid"

I like the sound of that!

I've had one mother's day away from the Bean. We've spent the rest together, the 3 of us. This year will be the Ren Faire again, a perfect day.
I thought mother's day was a day to celebrate being a mother? Like with your kid or something?

Hope your cat type person gets better, it's hard when furry folk are ill.

And I hope they find the right medicine for smallboy!

As you might imagine, we have been through a few rounds, over the years, of "no, that is not an acceptable treatment." Overall, we've had excellent medical people, and I hope you are equally fortunate.

You ain't gonna go for love or money, and dialysis continues to pull fluid off. The worst constipation I have EVER seen. (Oh dear ghads, you went there. I've said if I talk much about those days, I can stop a room full of conversation and spoil a perfectly good day, right?)

Sorbitol works better than ANYTHING, including mineral oil. Milk of Magnesia? Pul-leeze. On everyone. Anytime. Anywhere.

Oh, he's very mine - I just wish I'd looked at the bottle a bit harder before giving. I mean, the dose itself was huge - WTF.

Both of us are nurses' kids, Jim works in hospitals and I'm the widow of a type I diabetic. Mess with us at your own risk.

We'll be 'fortunate' or they'll be toast. *evil grins*

Well said. While kiddos may drive their mamas crazy after a certain age, Mother's Day celebrations with kiddo with a sitter doesn't make any kinda sense.

Mother's Day when either of my families were small generally consisted of them trying to do for me what I normally did for them (breakfast in bed, frex), along with a homemade card, etc. It most certainly did not involve me being away from them. (As I said when someone suggested hiring a nanny or au pair for the younger kids, I didn't have kids so someone else could raise 'em.) (Not that there weren't times when I could've used the extra pair of hands...)

Re: Mother's Day

My mum and I were never that much into it. We took advantage when I had the scratch to go to interesting shows (the current favorite is the tour of an 1880 house still owned by the family with tea in the dining room.)

You are, however, a mom. You are the female primary provider for a child. You are very fond of XanXan and you are determined to see his is taken care of (good show on not blindly following Kaiser!) and providing for his future.

However, you may do what you damn well please. :D

I'm thinking of taking him to the brunch at the Proud Bird in Inglewood and letting him watch the planes land at LAX. ^^

They should have used simple syrup, and a lower volume. It's medicine, use overflavoring, it may still taste like crap, but more than 5 ml a dose is a hard sell. Someone just doesn't understand kids....or bowels.

You'd think, right? Would you believe they're *still* checking their formulary for something else?

From: [identity profile] drlaurac.livejournal.com
I do believe. It may be that it's not stable in simple syrup for very long. Well, then either re-dispense every 4 days or so and keep it in the fridge, or teach you to prepare each dose as needed. It's NOT rocket science, and you are a couple of very smart cookies.
What is the name of the drug they want to use, and I will see what I can find out from the local children's hospital?

Isoniazid. Yeah, I know. Comes in every flavor of the rainbow. *eyeroll*

OK, since he's 30 pounds, that's 13.6 kilograms. The PREVENTION regimen for a positive PPD of isoniazid is 10mg/kg/day, a dose of 136 mg once daily.

There is a commerically available isoniazid preparation that can be bought a pint (473 ml) at a time by a pharmacy, it is orange flavored and is 50mg/ml. So each dose of that would be only 2.7 ml.

Or, there are two different ways they could compound this, see this website:
http://www.pharminfotech.co.nz/manual/Formulation/mixtures/isoniazid.html
one with sorbitol would be less than 5 ml once daily. One with a bunch of other crap would be 2.7 ml/day.

A pharmacist here used to work at a local compounding pharmacy, and he called his old boss who said that they compound their own using a product called Orasweet/Oraplus. It's something special for getting pills into little people when it's just not available that way commercially.

So I'm kind of afraid of what these guys are doing back there behind the counter!

16 ml. That's what the bottle says. A. Dose.

Oh so not happy here. If I don't get an answer soon, I'm going to get the stompy boots on.

Worst part? "Oh, you can't flush this stuff - it's hazardous waste - and now, it's YOUR hazardous waste. Here, have a list of government agencies to help you dispose of it. BYE BYE!"

*grumble*

What is the concentration of this stuff? What does do they say they are giving him?
I'll check our list to see if it's REALLY hazardous waste.
And some pharmacies will accept the stuff back as waste, they just can't put it back into stock. If Jim works at a hospital, their pharmacy may accept it back if Kasier is being a bunch of wankers. Which they clearly are!!!
