I learned the word 'homosexual' before gay or lesbian.

And I always thought that the same word for both genders was great, and that you had a cute one for the guys and a overly-erudite ancient three syllable one for the gals in spite of it.

And thought it was a bunch of junk.

Even when you didn't need to identify which one was which gender, you were still identifying which one people were. (And the females still came off as weirdos.)

Bah.

There's your moment of zen for the day.

When I am using my physical gender, I pointedly use "gay woman" -- I really dislike the gender separation in the gay community.

At the age of ten I asked a classmate, "What does 'gay' mean?"

He said, "Basically, it's boys kissing boys."

This was the clearest definition I had to go with for years. (I wasn't told there were girls who kissed girls until much later.) I don't think I believed then that it was real, in the same way that when you're ten you don't really believe life goes on in China or Australia in the same sense that it goes on in your own back yard.
