Jim calls me - kid is in for his checkup (he's on an Isoniazid regimen for suspect latent tuberculosis) and while we thought he'd get a nasal spray 'shot' for the seasonal flu, that was about it.

Uh, they did his four-year innoculations. That's four shots AND a nasal spray up his nose, thank you very much.

I went over to Target and bought toys and stickers. I don't recall ever getting more than two shots in one go, ever.

(Anyone want to poke me with sharp sticks about my choice to innoculate? I'll ruin you. And I doubt seriously I'll have to use language unsuited to a family audience, either.)

He wanted Star Wars stickers. They didn't have any, so I hope he'll be okay with Transformers instead.

Brave lil' toaster. He's getting such a hug when I get home....

They have more shots now than they did when we were kids. I remember poor Kiddo getting stuck like a pincushion. When Kiddo was that age the chicken pox vaccine was optional and I went for it, remembering the four (4) times I had the pox before I was immune and I still have scars. I think chixpox is now required.

Poor little Xander. Big hugs. :/

They give for both hep A & B now. I have so much catching up to do, in comparison.

What a big boy!

I'm so glad you are vaccinating him. Even though I supposedly had some kind of repercussions from a vaccine (maybe), that kind of thing was years ago, and even then it was relatively rare, I am a largely in favor of the greater good of vaccines. They've also learned when to put off a vaccine, which they didn't know when I was little.

Aww. I think Alan got a bunch of shots once but not at age 4.
(HUGS) to Xander.

Are they still keeping him on the antibiotics?

Glad you're on the inoculation band wagon. You would not believe how many women have given me unsolicited advice about how it's bad- even the H1N1 shot, which is strongly suggested for pregnant mums.

I roll my eyes a lot these days.

Aw, the poor kid! Stickers and toys are well deserved.

(And definitely no flak from me on vaccinations.)

I work at a very large hospital, and anyone there will tell everyone they know that only fools operating under the misguided premise that they're better off without innocs go without, let alone leave their children to go unguarded.

I just think of the generations of mothers who watched their children die horribly of measles and polio and scarlet fever and imagine their ghosts screaming in the ears of the ones who insist vaccinations are terrible for their little darlings.

Brave little toaster indeed!

He has all my sympathy; I got lots of extra childhood shots because of our need to travel, and I am pretty sure I had to have at least four once or twice. (I remember my terror when the nurse's eyes got all big: "Oh, Africa! You need a *lot* of shots for Africa! And great big malaria pills, and..." Owie. Fortunately North Africa was out of the malaria belt at least.)

I'm sure you already have appropriately decorated Band-Aids, too. Being able to show off war wounds and get petted for it is also good.

Thank you for vaccinating!

Plenty of polio cripples still around to point out the non-lethal consequences, too.

I may start telling the impertinent that I am in this wheelchair because I wasn't properly vaccinated. (Small children who ask me are generally told, with a grave face, that I didn't eat my vegetables.)

I know they're wonderful and all, but it's sure hard to sit there and watch your kid scream because of all the vaccines they have now. I recently updated my MMR vaccine and that sucker HURTS! I feel terrible for little kids who have to cope with it because I almost cried. It burned and my arm felt bruised for 2 weeks. Bleh!

I still carry the results of a badly mistimed DPT (ask me about it sometime - the doc really screwed the pooch - and me) but I still had all four of my kids innoculated against anything they could be innoculated against - but I did tell their respective pediatricians about my bad result, and they modified the choice of vaccine in that respect (killed virus vs. live, IIRC) in that case. I also told them about my penicillin allergy, and, although there was nothing to suggest that particular sensitivity could be hereditary, the ped-docs were very careful when prescribing antibiotics. (As it turned out, they all got the lactose intolerance but were spared the penicillin allergy.)

Oh, poor kid. I'm glad to hear that he's getting his shots though, too.

My mom says she's not getting a shot for the H1N1, because apparently, it's similar to the strain of flu that was floating around in the fifties, and she claims she's immune to it now. I'd give her the stink eye, but she gets stubborn about stuff like that...

Me, I'm gonna get myself sticked. I don't like getting sick.

i had a lot of granola no-vax friends... but i traveled with anjolie when she was a baby. early and often. by airplane. i knew it was right with how much exposure she got. i think the benefits outweigh the risks.

Considering I truly believe CFIDs to be viral (in my heart of hearts, yuppers) and it will be dealt with either by more viral therapy or vaccination...you won't be lying.

The kid has my ampicillin allergy. WTF. None of my sibs got Dad's sensitivity to antibiotics - and my adopted wee has it.

(And of course, nobody knew he had it until we gave it for scarlet fever earlier this year. 9_9)

*nods* There's a GOOD chance my exposure to Hong Kong (yes, I was) may be in my favor (oh very yes, I remember that one) - but I'm still getting all my shots.

I just have to go find them now. The boys all have theirs.

I have no patience with it - the gloves come off when this subject comes up.

Too many years growing up in hospitals. Too many years seeing what happens when good, basic care is shortcut for $$$.

Not gonna happen here. And if someone wants to get snotty, I will ruin them. With great abandon.

They might have even found the shiny new retrovirus responsible recently. I'm not even unpacking my hopes until it's all confirmed by other labs, but it's very interesting news.

But I'm sure refusing to eat my veggies also impacted my immune system. ;)
