"We're closed for the holidays beginning 12/21 until...oh, after the first."

This is me, finding out I don't have childcare - of any kind - the busiest two weeks of my year.

The busiest two weeks of EVERYONE'S year.

"What, didn't you know? It was in the signup paperwork...."

Lady, I did that paperwork in May of 2008. You have no earthly idea of what has had to be tossed out of my memory like so many temp files since then.

SO GLAD I ASKED NOW.

Boy, Fourth of July weekend is going to look like a bargain at this rate.

I can still remember the first conversation I had with my then-daycare provider about holidays...she also told me, "But it was in the paperwork!" *sigh*

Hopefully you can construct a patchwork support system over the holidays out of friends and family.

As I said - glad I found out now, eh?

This was always the dilema I faced when I was married. I always got stuck taking one week off, and my wife took the other... no relatives you can farm the care out to?

Busiest time of the year. Everyone is going to be booked. And you dropped in on the nearest family. That doesn't drive.

Yup. And probably the worst part is he's going to miss preschool and his friends, too.

Sorry I don't live closer, I'd volunteer for a day...

Same here. If I lived closer I would be happy to provide a day or two.

I'll be having a chat with [livejournal.com profile] chronovius when he gets off WoW... we might be able to work something out.

We were lucky with Alan's center that they were open those weeks - I think there was just a day or two they weren't open other than Xmas and New Year's.

Fortunately I am able to vacation at that time of year and save my time for that. We are however watching a friend of ours kids for a day or two this year. Wish we were closer, I'd help with Xander too.

Scheduling will get a little easier for 2010 since you'll be used to the calendar.

Do you know any local high schoolers who might be tempted by 2 weeks worth of paid work?

Frankly, I'd be surprised if they didn't close. Most private day cares do close those two weeks, or at least follow the school schedule of whatever school district they are in.

Do you have any health clubs anywhere nearby? Some of the fancy ones do feature drop in care (they charge per hour, but it's still useful in a pinch), so you might want to investigate if that's feasible.

IKEA does it by the hour, but that's not real helpful. See, one of the things I really must have is consistency with kiddo - that's a safety/security issue. Different day, different person might be okay - but an hour here, and hour there? Not so much.

Any chance you can convince your boss to let you work from home during the holidays? Or maybe bring the kid along to work?

Kid would be miserable with me at work. Working from home would mean getting very little work done if I was alone with him. But that angle may work if I can get another pair of hands in...exploring.
