Someone hacking my debit card and overdrawing the house account $700 -

AND

A lovely bank system that says the money (and overdraft fees) could be returned when fraud was found to be the case. When, mind.

Claims are filed, as well as police report.

I now am going to be working the day after Thanksgiving. I will out four days this week - it's the least I can do.

And I'm going to have to find a way to tell my Mother I can't afford to see her for Thanksgiving this year.

Yeah, there's a reason I've always been wary of using debit cards too much.. Same fraud protection as a credit card, they say. What they don't say is that unlike a credit card, you're the one who's out all the money until some months later when the investigation's all over.

There does seem to be an outbreak of credit/debit card theft on my f-list lately. Wonder what's up with all that.

on the holidays, it always spikes. people are gearing up for the christmas season, so both the shoppers are gathering more predictably and the stores handling security with a focus on in-store theft, leaving the whole "two guys in a van logging all the data the store router's sending" kind of theft wide open.

i'm still not clear why stores sent the credit info over Wi-Fi, but i'm sue there's some cost explanation....

funny how bank systems are built to protect themselves from worrying about returning your money that their entire job is to keep safe.

the "could" is easily the worst part of that whole thing.

Oh, it does also occur to me that if you've only been talking to your bank thus far, you might also want to contact Visa/MC (whoever the check card is done through) to see if they have any ability (independent of the bank) to reverse the transactions pending fraud claim resolution.

(I suspect their answer will probably be "you're not a real customer, go talk to your bank", but you never know until you ask...)
