I remember JFK's assassination.
Imagine every single adult you know, interacted with or saw in deepest mourning.
Every. Single. One.
Your parents. Your teachers. People at the store.
And every channel on television has nothing but reports about it on. From when it starts up early in the morning to when it goes off the air at night.
A complete reflection of what's going on around you.
Bobby Kennedy and MLK's assassinations a few years later were almost as if they'd learned something and nobody talked much about it. The kids were taken out to play and nobody talked about it while we were awake.
Much the same thing happened the deeper we got into Vietnam.
Then Nixon screwed the pooch and that was the end of that. Didn't matter what Watergate was all about - we found out we got served, and that was the end of trusting whoever was in the White House.
But until then? You just took it on faith. Really.

Date: 2010-03-22 04:34 pm (UTC)I remember the Challenger explosion when I was in 4th grade. I saw the principal rushing out of the office and came to our class first to tell the teacher the news. I was shocked, the rest of the class had no clue what the Challenger even was.

Date: 2010-03-22 05:32 pm (UTC)I knew on sight that I did not care for the man.
Up until then, I think the hostage crisis was sorta fuzzy.
Then again, I was 7 at the time of the 1980 election.
Prior to that, the only big news event I remember was Nadia Comaneci's perfect score during the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
