What I usually end up doing is that if someone in front of me in line is short some money and I have it to spare... it goes to them. Usually this has been... on the order of less than a dollar, so it's not that big a deal.
I do know how embarrassing it is to be short money when you're buying something, especially food.
I do that too, if I have the change on hand to do it. Those rare times I'm in a drive-thru, if I've got change from whatever I bought I conspire with the cashier to apply it to the order of the person behind me. I've also bought Jell-O anonymously for strangers in restaurants (or other dessert items, depends on mood and what's available) especially if someone is looking glum. The surprise and enjoyment is my reward, and it always makes my day so much brighter to have maybe given a moment of enjoyment to someone. :D
Can't do it in Dallas anymore. They replaced the toll baskets and the toll both attendants with cameras. You either pay with your toll tag automatically or the camera snaps a pic of your plate and mails you a bill. Just saying.
as much as I'd like to, I can't afford to, so I do the next best thing, I always look for the person who's desperately trying to merge and if I can, I safely let them merge in front of me.
