I think that it is important, in civics, to teach kids what we've wrought, that there are aspects of this country that are very good but that it still needs work, needs people's voices, votes, and dissent, in order to stay functional. I slide more toward Howard Zinn's side (I'll bet he doesn't teach only the "bad stuff," but provides a balance) but I think teaching kids that we're somehow Above All The Rest leads (as Zinn said) to blithe acceptance, to complacency, to "America: Love it or Leave It" (one of the scariest mottoes I've ever known), to sitting on asses letting things go on as usual.
