Honest.

Overheard at work in the end user support area.

Since I was picking up a printout and heard this, I stopped dead, turned and said..."what?"

He muttered something about it being his political stance.

I reminded him gently that a lot of people died in France before we ever got involved in WWII.

He was upset that France wasn't "supporting us."

I took the high ground. I remarked that this would be a very expensive endeavor should we go forward with it. His bud nodded sagely and said "commitment, yeah."

I added we likely couldn't afford it. But I held my tongue at explaining "commitment" to him.

Where the fuck are they getting this?!

But in a sign of the open rifts within the Council, the French and Russian foreign ministers both received applause when they said there was no justification yet for a war with Iraq.

These unusual and undiplomatic displays caused German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, current council president, to ask for order inside the chamber.

Somebody who was putting their hands together had better explain to these 20-something boys WHY. And quick.

They have no idea what being invaded by force is like, and why a country having suffered this would refuse to support such action towards another one.

"A lot of people died during WWII because of the French..."

A lot of people in my country died because we were then allies to the Americans, but we never state it that way. People die in war, and to state that would be placing blame on somebody who could never be in total control of their environment.

Actually, it's a tactical mistake to invade America, so I'm sure that besides terrorist attacks, no full-scaleseige could ever occur. It's like trying to invade Russia...too much space to cover.

A fairly intelligent, educated man in his 40s who works in my building said he couldn't believe France won't support us after "we saved their bacon."

I thought of several ways I could respond: logical, compassionate, rude.

I settled for, "It was two generations ago. Get over it."
