I'm going to let it percolate a bit more - but --

Hit me.

[Poll #168143]

For those coming in late, the "new community" being the one I'm proposing for surviving caregivers - now that's succinct. [livejournal.com profile] riverheart, [livejournal.com profile] kimonthejourney, while your role wasn't as caregiver, surviving a suicide does put you in the same category as you try to figure out just why this happened, even if it can only be in hindsight. *chuckles* But then again, my father died as a result of an accidental overdose, so maybe I'm not so far off.

But I'm not aiming for a support group - as I said, they meet once a month and it's very clinical.

No, I want the down and dirty. Gallows humor without being goth. Stuff you can't talk about at the dinner table, but would be common knowledge among those of us who've had to deal with it.

Like....

The last three years of Cliff's life, I could break into segments at August. In August of 1995, he had his strokes and heart attacks. In 1996, he had his right leg amputated above the knee and began dialysis. In 1997, he entered long-term acute care to accommodate HBO to close a wound on his left heel. In 1998, he came home after traveling across the country looking for a cure. He would die that September.

However, I'm reminded of a visit his doctor paid him in the hospital after having the right leg AAK surgery. Cliff was an avid numismatist and Doctor knew this. He brought a collection of gold medallions for Cliff to appraise for him, as they had been a legacy from a relative who had passed away. Whether or not he was being kind to Cliff, I'll never be certain. I never saw the coins - but I sure heard about them.

This must have been some collection. Large as talers, solid 24K gold, hand-struck. 700 years old, European. Incredible.

Cliff's comment to the doctor (albeit it sheepish, past the normal "you've got a wonderful collection, etc.")? "I'd give my right leg for one of those...."

And they both laughed.

I'm also looking for suitable artwork. I might make some. *shock*
