How nice -

I was introduced to a new holiday this morning - Rakhi.

This ritual not only strengthens the bond of love between brothers and sisters, but also transcends the confines of the family. When a Rakhi is tied on the wrists of close friends and neighbors, it underscores the need for a harmonious social life, where every individual co-exist peacefully as brothers and sisters. All members of the community commit to protect each other and the society in such congregational Rakhi Utsavs, popularized by the Nobel laureate Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.

It's a holiday rich in legends - ancient.

Ultimately, it's another gift-giving, renewal of ties holiday - sweet like an anniversary, but strongly tied to filial responsiblity by choice, even when it is intended between siblings and is by nature, chaste.

You can adopt a Rakhi sibling - but if you check the forum discussions, it is a point of order that the relationship remains chaste.

It's not just a nice idea; a number of my coworkers devoted most of their weekend to parties to celebrate it. And received Rakhi in the mail - and sent them.

Another nice facet, methinks.

About.com also goes up with Wikipedia as far as finding information on a subject is concerned - keeping in mind that it's entirely volunteer and the information needs to go through the "data could be subjective" filter.
