Please forward this to everyone you know in the Bay Area who might know someone who can help. We need help with this ASAP, hopefully by the end of the week.

I have come to the conclusion that we have to find our four rats another home. We love them dearly, but I've run out of money and can't afford even the relatively small cost of vet bills anymore. The reason this is urgent is that two of them are currently ill with respiratory infections: one is old and has chronic pneumonia, one is quite young and might avoid a chronic infection but only if treated NOW.

The vet visits and medicines for both would likely come to about $150; I know that that would be possible for someone with steady income and a reasonable rent. Without more than a half a job between the two of us, though, there is no way for me to pay it off. I have to find somewhere that these guys can get the treatment they need.

There are three rats in one cage, and a bachelor rat in the other. All male. Two senior rats (2+ years) in the large cage with a baby (6-7 weeks old) who all get along well. The baby, Pete, is very well handled, the older rats less so but they are willing to cuddle and they never bite. They ignore cats, but have never encountered a feline face-to-face while outside the cage, so far as I know.

Abe is the bachelor. He is terrified of cats and very aggressive toward other rats, but an utter sweetheart when it comes to people... he loves being taken out of his cage to ride around and explore. If he were neutered he might lose his aggressiveness and be able to join another colony. He is healthy.

It breaks my heart to do this, but if you or anyone you know is able to take either one or both sets, please let us know. I'll be trying the vet's office as well, to see whether any of their clients would be able to take on another few rats. Cages etc. can be included if necessary.

Thanks.

Please respond here or to if you think you can help.
