BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Mar 4, 2005 — A couple's plans for a birthday party for their former pet chimpanzee turned tragic when two other chimps at an animal sanctuary escaped from their cage and attacked. The man was critically injured with massive wounds to his face, body and limbs, and the attacking animals were shot dead.

The couple is 64 and 62 years old (she's older) - and they were there visiting a chimp they'd had since their early twenties. The chimp is now 39 years old, and they had brought him back with them from Africa after poachers had killed the mother.

They were attacked when chimps from a neighboring cage got loose -

He's at Loma Linda, trying to get his face put back together. He's lost a foot - and his testicles, from all reports. (Ewwwwww.) Critical condition - and get this, they had lived like this in West Covina until last October. One little happy family.

I have to give them credit for tenacity. But in all honesty, their devotion (and arrogance) is extremely misplaced.

Wild animals are wild animals. They are not pets - and - they are not replacements for offspring. Everyone is done a disservice in cases like this.

Poor people. Poor, poor everyone.
