ms-meredith-milton:

During my Epic Battle Against Mold and Chaos, I discovered two surprising things: I have a HUGE number of postcards from nearly 10 years of travel; I have lots of stamps.

So I had an idea.  What if I offered to send a postcards to a friends written as if from Steve to Tony or Tony to Steve?  It would be like putting a teeny tiny microfiction in the mail!

I have no idea if anyone will be interested in this and if it would be manageable, but I feel like I can sit down at least once a week and get a postcard sent.  In fact, it sounds fun!

So here’s how it will work: send me your mailing address by private message here or by email to ms.meredith.milton at gmail.com.  Be sure to give me your tumblr / fandom name so I know who you are.  (And if you can get mail at that name, I’m happy to send it to your tumblr name instead of your legal name.) Let me know if you would rather get a postcard addressed to Steve from Tony, or to Tony from Steve.

Once you get your postcard, I ask that you take a picture of the image and the message (cropping your address out of course) and put it on tumblr and tag me so I can reblog it.

Once you get your card, I’ll delete your address from my messages. And I officially promise not to stalk, advertise to you, or out you as a fandom person to anybody.

So, if that sounds fun, send me a message and someday Steve or Tony may send you a postcard!

xoxo,

Meredith

How We Saved the Kirtland’s Warbler

Forty years ago, the Kirtland’s Warbler (Dendroica kirtlandii) was nearly extinct. Thanks to the hard work of conservation effort in the Jack Pine forests of Michigan , this remarkable bird species is on the road to recovery!

The Raven

There once was a girl named Lenore
And a bird and a bust and a door
And a guy with depression
And a whole lot of questions
And the bird always says “Nevermore.”

Footprints in the Sand
There was a man who, at low tide
Would walk with the Lord by his side
Jesus said “Now look back;
You’ll see one set of tracks.
That’s when you got a piggy-back ride.”

Response to ‘This Is Just To Say’
This note on the fridge is to say
That those ripe plums that you put away
Well, I ate them last night
They tasted all right
Plus I slept with your sister. M’kay?

Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening
There once was a horse-riding chap
Who took a trip in a cold snap
He stopped in the snow
But he soon had to go:
He was miles away from a nap.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
There was an old father of Dylan
Who was seriously, mortally illin’
“I want,” Dylan said
“You to bitch till you’re dead.
“I’ll be pissed if you kick it while chillin’.”

I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud
There once was a poet named Will
Who tramped his way over a hill
And was speechless for hours
Over some stupid flowers
This was years before TV, but still.

THE ONE FOR DO NOT GO GENTLE IM CRYING

A chap from a faraway land
Said two big stone legs (topless) stand
An inscription fine
Reads “this shit’s all mine”
But all there’s to see is the sand.

OMFG,

The Second Coming

The falcon flies wider in scorn
All things fall apart, or are torn
And now, what rough beast
Will arise in the East
And slouch Bethlehemward to be born?

Edgar Allen Poe, “The Raven”:
Enthroned on the bust by the door,
The raven exclaims “Nevermore!”
It’s rather annoying,
For I was enjoying
My mourning for dear lost Lenore.Edgar Allen Poe, “The Bells”:
Bells are quite noisy, it’s true,
And each has a quite distinct hue,
From silver and gold
Different stories are told,
Foretelling both glory and rue.W. H. Auden, “Funeral Blues”:
Shut off the clocks and the phone,
And let no dog bark with his bone:
Let the planes overhead
Only say “he is dead”…
Now I’m sorry, there’s nobody home.T. S. Eliot, “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock”:
A man can walk down on the beach
Roll his pants up and munch on a peach;
He isn’t deluded
And won’t be included
By mermaids that sing each to each.T.S. Eliot, “The Wasteland”:
You called me the hyacinth girl
When you gave sweet Shakespeare a whirl;
The city’s unreal,
And the dead men don’t feel,
So let’s let the storm warnings twirl.Lewis Carroll, “The Jabberwock”:
‘Twas mimsy out there by the wabe
And all of the momewraths out grabe.
The Jabberwock’s dead
(Some kid took off its head,
And his father said “You’re my best babe!”).Beowulf:
Terribly troubled, the Thane
Demanded defense from a Dane
For fierce in the fen
Mighty monsters maimed men
Great Grendal gave plenty of pain.William Butler Yeats, “Stolen Child”:
Come on, human kid, and let’s go,
There’s so much to see and to show.
Run off with the fae,
Hurry fast, skip away,
And you’ll never a mortal life know!John Keats, ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci":
The sedge is all dry; spring has sped,
And the birds that once sang have all fled.
The merciless dame
Goes on making her claim
To young hunks who keep winding up dead.Lord Tennyson, “The Princess”:
The echoes keep fading away
With the splendor that ebbs with the day,
But the castle is grand
In this bright fairyland,
And there’s not that much else I can say.Christina Rossetti, “Goblin Market”:
At goblin men we mustn’t stare,
And we shouldn’t go to their Fair.
Their fruit may seem tasty,
But we can’t be hasty,
And don’t let them play with your hair!

Oh my god, the Beowulf one.  Oh.

holy shit, the merciless dame is perfect

HRC was my second choice.  I didn’t get my first.

My college degree is in mass communications, popular culture.  I got it after being immersed studying violence on television, first-hand accounts of atrocities during WWIi (and after) - because when I was 12, nobody was discussing Manzanar (and why not), Solzhenitsyn was still relevant, and why would they send my older brother to Vietnam?  You can’t break a pencil in half, but we can kill (and turn a blind eye to) thousands.  Really?

When Watergate broke, it was the ultimate betrayal.  Nothing before or since really compares, but the complexion of politics in the United States has tipped towards outrage culture ever since.  If you want to believe - and exhort others to believe - that any political figure is corrupt, it’s EASY.  Just look back.  Whether it is actually true, supportable or not - you can libel, slander, question, deride, degrade, dismiss all you like.  Look hard enough.  Talk to the Right Person - you’ll find it.

The truth is so hard to see for the smoke.

To me, the biggest danger posed by Trump is the amount of denial of what is happening right in front of the RNC supporters.  If I heard “he’ll change once elected” one more time, I might ask what they expect him to change into.  A nice leisure suit, perhaps?

Yeah, I remember Bill Clinton.  I remember Al Gore, too.  I remember tons of energy, money and political capital squandered to keep inquiries, one after another in the pipeline.

Hey, obstructionism works.  Denial of Service attacks, we’re all familiar with.

I won’t say I’m impressed, but I have to accept that as hard as they look, they can’t paste anything on HRC that has stuck.  Stuck means conviction, BTW.  (Wasserman-Shultz, different story.  Her time is coming.)  I resent the smarmy attitude that HRC ‘deserves’ this.  It’s intended to make one angry - but all I smell is bait, and I refuse to take it anymore.

People stood in my living room in 2008 and said she was going to be our next Democratic president.  Against the energetic, thoughtful and charismatic Barack Obama, she couldn’t win.  Bernie Sanders started his campaign late, after repeatedly saying he didn’t want to run.  God, he was amazing and it almost happened - but I’d listen to the man at this point.  He predates Watergate, peeps.

We don’t get a redo on the primary - much as I am sure the RNC wants to as well.  Remember, I *am* Green, and have been since 1992.  Jill Stein is as bugnuts as Ralph Nader - and better served downticket where she can do some good.  When there is a viable Green Party candidate for President, I’ll be the first person to start shouting.

I remember Al Gore.

I remember George W. bringing the SCOTUS back into session to weigh in on Teri Schiavo.  Just, her.  Healthcare to make that decision possible for others?  *crickets*

I remember how the world came together to support us after 9/11 (including most of the Middle East) and how that support was squandered in the political polarization necessary to support invading Iraq.

I am fully aware of the costs of that war.  We’re importing food from China, and exporting our jobs there.  College, to prepare for viable employment, is only affordable if you already have $100K incomes with no expenses.  We enable the acquisition of wealth by exploiting cheap labor abroad, but ignore the cost of living at home and tell Americans they’re not worth their pay.

We are ignoring the reality of climate change.

The biggest failure of Barack Obama was being a person of color who never did anything that allowed an investigation, successfully turning around an economy that was headed for termination in 2008.  Not recession, not depression.  GONE.

The biggest failure of HRC is that nobody found her guilty when they did investigate.

I *want* a healthier RNC.  I want the current crop of hatred to burn itself out and be turned away.  Conservative thought has real value in this world, but I haven’t seen any for decades now.  (I’ve seen a ton of “On My Side,” though.  Refrain, I beg you.  That way lies madness.)

If there was one lesson from 9/11 is that it was that we are better together.  Look for the uniters, not the dividers.

I want Elizabeth Warren and Corey Booker in 2020.  I want a chance at that, and electing a fascist won’t do it.

I remember Golda Meier.  I remember Margaret Thatcher.

I am so disappointed this election is even getting as close as it is.

But I am not going to give Trump a damn thing.  And it’s not an attack to ask why anyone would.

See you at the polls in November.

- We made massive strides in Alzheimers’ prevention.

- We found out that the ozone layer is repairing itself and that all the work we did to get rid of those aerosol chemicals was actually worth it.

- This therapy could cure radiation sickness.

- The Anglican church resolved to solemnize same-sex unions the same as opposite-sex unions, which required a super-majority of all three orders of the church (lay, clergy, bishop) and got MORE than that from both lay and bishop.

- The Rabbinical Assembly issued a resolution affirming the rights of transgender and non-conforming individuals.

And I know I’m missing stuff, because I wanted a citation for every single thing I put on there.

Yes, there have been some really bad things that have happened in 2016. There have also been a number of huge fucking miracles, and SIMILAR bad things have always happened, just about every damn year - maybe not to you, or maybe they didn’t make the news, and maybe you just don’t remember any of the good because of that whole massive Negative Bias problem that human brains have, but?

A lot of good shit happened. A lot.

And like I do actually get the sudden overwhelmed feeling of EVERYTHING SUCKS? but that mindset is, at this point, literally our worst enemy. “Everything is terrible somebody do something” helplessness is what will in fact consign us to everything BEING terrible.

Everything is not terrible. In fact there are new ways, every single month, wherein new opportunities and miracles are happening and no that does not balance out the bad shit but it gives every reason to FIGHT the bad shit, and to get past the bad shit, and to make sure the bad shit ISN’T the overwhelming stain.

So.

Right here, right now.  Deep breath.

Dances with Wolves actor Chief David Bald Eagle dies at 97 - BBC News:
tlatollotl:

The grandson of Chief White Bull, who fought in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, Bald Eagle appeared in more than 40 films.

He went on to become the face of South Dakota’s Lakota people.

He died at his home on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation on 22 July, according to a local funeral home.

Born in a tepee in 1919 on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation, his native Lakota name translates as Wounded in Winter Beautiful Bald Eagle.

He served in the US Army during World War Two where he fought in the landings at Anzio in Italy and won the silver star.

After being severely wounded by German fire while parachuting into Normandy during D-Day, Bald Eagle pursued a music career as a drummer for Cliff Keyes Big Band.

Following a foray into ballroom dancing, which ended with the tragic death of his dance partner and wife, Penny Rathburn, in a car crash, Bald Eagle established a career in Hollywood.

He trained a range of stars including John Wayne in horse and gun handling, and served as Errol Flynn’s stunt double.

In the late 1950s he joined a rodeo display team and while in Belgium met his second wife, Josee.

Bald Eagle had a varied career in showbusiness and was also a rodeo cowboy

He continued to work as an actor and became the face of South Dakota’s state tourism promotions for decades.

Outside of showbusiness, Bald Eagle’s dedication to the Lakota people saw him elected as the first Chief of the United Native Nations in 2001, addressing indigenous people worldwide.

His last film role was in Neither Wolf Nor Dog, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival last month.

The film’s director, Steven Lewis Simpson, praised Bald Eagle as “truly unique”.

“His life was more extraordinary than of those that most great biographies are written about; the joys and the tragedies,” he said.

“He was an astonishingly beautiful man. The sparkle from his eyes when he smiled or was being mischievous was a joy to behold.”

Rooks Funeral Home in Eagle Butte said Bald Eagle’s funeral is scheduled for 29 July at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, following a traditional four-day wake.

I have serious qualms with Hillary Clinton and with the Democratic Party, but I have more than qualms with Donald Trump — I have grave concerns. Maybe you don’t have undocumented friends. Maybe you don’t have Muslim friends. Maybe you are not in the Black Lives Matter movement. And maybe because you are disconnected from those three groups, you don’t really see and feel the threat that Trump poses to them, but it is very real.

We all have to make choices here. I am choosing to follow Bernie’s lead in supporting Hillary Clinton. I am sure it is exponentially harder for him than it is for me or for you, but I trust this man. He knows that we only have two real choices for President. It’s either going to be Clinton or Trump. Period.

You can vote for Jill Stein. You can vote for Gary Johnson. You can write in Bernie. You can sit out and not vote. You can vote for Deez Nuts, but know this, because of the way our system is shaped right now, either Clinton or Trump will become President of the United States and your vote or no-vote will all play a role in who gets elected.

If you know me at all, you know that I have nothing but love and respect for each of you who want to change this system once and for all. I do too — badly. After this election, I will do everything in my power to explore and expand our options. I am not satisfied with where we are, but with everything in me, I am convinced that President Trump will be a problem that we all regret way more than President Clinton.

lauralot89:

Everybody knows Hillary’s a liar.  Everybody knows Hillary’s corrupt.  Everybody knows Hillary’s a criminal.  Everybody hates Hillary, and no one enthusiastically supports her; her voters are just afraid of Trump.

I’ve heard these things stated over and over throughout the primaries, without any sources to back them up.  Who needs sources?  We all know Hillary Clinton’s the worst, don’t we?  She wouldn’t have decades of scandals and all these hearings and investigations if she weren’t.  Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Well, except the smoke about Whitewater, because that seven year investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing by the Clintons.

And it turns out that six official investigations into Vince Foster’s suicide found nothing to suggest the Clintons had a hand in his death.  In fact, there’s no evidence pinning them to any of the dozens of deaths they’re said to have caused.

There’s always Benghazi, though.  Sure, the eighth investigation ended the way the first seven did, with no evidence of wrongdoing, but maybe another investigation will find the truth!

Okay, but what about her email server and the way she compromised national security and tried to cover it up?  FBI director James Comey even overstepped his authority when speaking about the investigation’s findings in order to publicly condemn her!  Except he also said that “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case”, and later clarified before a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing that there was no evidence Clinton’s server had been hacked, that Clinton did not lie, and that she did not break the law.

Well, she still voted for the Iraq War when she was senator!  Which she freely admits was a mistake.  She and other senators believed that the Congressional Resolution they were voting for would authorize the president to use force only after “diplomatic or other peaceful means” had been exhausted.  She even said during the Senate debate on the resolution that attacking then and there could “set a precedent that could come back to haunt us.”

Still, she won’t release the transcripts of those speeches she was paid for!  How dare she not give up her intellectual property created while she was a private citizen, never mind that one of the speeches is already freely available for viewing online.  Why can’t she be like Trump and Sanders and just refuse to release her tax returns instead?

But she’s a liar!  There’s a video of her lying for thirteen straight minutes!  True, it’s manipulatively edited and mostly just showing how her views, like anyone else’s, have evolved over time, and Politifact ranks her as the most honest candidate, and the former executive editor of The New York Times called her “fundamentally honest and trustworthy,” but well, everybody knows she’s a liar!

All right, so she’s never been convicted of any crime, and all the investigations into her alleged scandals keep coming up with nothing, and she won the Democratic primaries after consistently polling ahead of Sanders, but that’s only proof of her corruption.  She’s rigged the system so that she can get away with anything!  She just somehow hasn’t rigged it well enough to keep all this stuff out of the press.

Because that’s definitely more rational than concluding that, just maybe, she’s an imperfect but well-qualified candidate with a bad reputation formed by decades of smears and conspiracy theories.

I know this is hard for some of you die-hard Bernie supporters to accept, Hillary Clinton does have some good stances, views and ideas. Bernie has forced her to the left on many issues. The official platform of the Democratic Party is as progressive as it has ever been. Yes, I know it’s not binding and that they can simply ignore it and do whatever they want, but I believe a real chance exists that Bernie’s influence on the Democratic and the influence of the millions of us who voted for him, may actually cause Hillary Clinton to be more progressive than she ever would’ve been without us. I think that the coming resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz from the DNC all but shows us that our power and influence is real.

Let’s not blow this. I know voting for Hillary Clinton is going to be tough when you believe in your heart that better options were available, but it’s time for us to rally behind Bernie and stop Trump. I’ve never said this before, but I believe that stopping Trump is a national emergency. He is that big of a threat and he is starting to pull ahead in the polls.

This is not a test. This is not a game. Please, join me, join Bernie, and get behind Clinton so that we can stop Trump together. Hold your nose if you must. Do whatever it takes, but please join us.

KING: To stop Donald Trump, I’ll be voting for Hillary Clinton - NY Daily News

I’m just gonna quote and repeat:

Let’s not blow this. I know voting for Hillary Clinton is going to be tough when you believe in your heart that better options were available, but it’s time for us to rally behind Bernie and stop Trump. I’ve never said this before, but I believe that stopping Trump is a national emergency. He is that big of a threat and he is starting to pull ahead in the polls.

I, too, hate that it’s come to this, but the reality is that it has come to this. We need to be responsible adults, set our emotions aside, and make sure that Donald Trump and the movement he leads never get close to the White House.
