Oxford University researchers say that trees which grew during intense radiation bursts in the past have ‘time-markers’ in their tree-rings that could help archaeologists date events from thousands of years ago.

In a new paper, the authors explain how harvesting such data could revolutionize the study of ancient civilizations such as the Egyptian and Mayan worlds. Until now scholars have had only vague evidence for dating when events happened during the earliest periods of civilization, with estimates being within hundreds of years. However, the unusually high levels of the radioactive isotope carbon-14 found in tree-rings laid down during the radiation bursts could help reliably pinpoint dates. The distinct spikes act as time-markers like secret clocks contained in timber, papyri, baskets made from living plants or other organic materials, says the paper published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A.

Scholars believe that intense solar storms caused major bursts of radiation to strike the Earth in 775 and 994 AD, which resulted in distinct spikes in the concentration of radiocarbon in trees growing at that time. Read more.

The Politics of Lying White People and the Black People Who Bear the Burden:

tracysactivism:

One of the reasons accusations of racism seem so inflammatory is that there is widespread belief that pointing out a racist act automatically means the person who did it hates people of color. Contrary to popular belief, racism does not necessarily equal hate. Racism sometimes manifests itself in the privileged apathy that does not consider people of color a lower, lesser form of humanity. Instead, people of color aren’t considered at all. To some people they are just brown props on a white stage—to be manipulated and used as needed. We are step stools and tools. They don’t always shoot black people in the face or string them from trees; sometimes they just carelessly toss us under the bus of their choosing.

To any new writers: Be brave! Take the plunge and post your fics - the world can’t wait to read them, and I’m sure they’re wonderful! And if you’ve already done so, then congratulations, and welcome to the world of writing!

To any old writers: Thank you, and keep going! Your fics are appreciated and enjoyed, and hopefully whatever comes next is as loved as it deserves to be!

To the popular writers: Well done on getting your work out there! It’s wonderful to see fics with so many notes, and I hope your next fic is just as appreciated!

To the writers who get 3 notes: Your work is no less amazing than those who get thousands of notes. Keep going, because there are people who adore what you write. You are fantastic and loved.

To the writers who post fics regularly: You are incredible, and should be both admired and feared. Well done for your wonderful work ethic, and for bringing quality writing to your fandoms!

To the writers who update irregularly: You are brilliant. Writing is hard, and just because you don’t update frequently doesn’t detract from the fact that you’re incredible people who are writing for nothing but pleasure. I hope your writing is going well, and that you know that your fics (and you!) are loved.

To the writers who have lost their inspiration: Don’t worry! Inspiration comes and goes, and hopefully your enthusiasm for your fics will come back. Until then, know that the writing you’ve already done is wonderful, and if you decide to continue, it’ll be fantastic.

To every writer: Thank you ❤️

Today on Fresh Air we’re talking about the future of our aging, unstable and inefficient electrical grid. Gretchen Bakke, author of the new book The Grid, says, “We can make a lot more electricity than we can use, and we can make more electricity than the grid can carry, but the grid is the weakest link.”
Bakke says solutions are as much about financial relationships, political interests and cultural patterns as they are about technology. One problem to solve is storage. “We think that we have electricity storage, but, in fact, for the grid we don’t.”
