Sometimes I feel alone when people say things like ‘Mary needs to be killed off already’ or ‘John doesn’t love her’ because I’m really fond of the character. I wanna see how many of you there are that appreciate her.

literarystarbucks:

Today is the day! Literary Starbucks: Fresh-Brewed, Half-Caf, No-Whip Bookish Humor is now available to purchase in stores. We know. We can’t believe it either.

Once again, we want to thank our amazing agent Christopher, and Fischer-Harbage, as well as Sylvan and the rest of our phenomenal publishing team over at St. Martin’s Press, for making this dream a reality. It’s been about a year and a half in the making, but it’s really here.

The Literary Starbucks book contains posts you may recognize from the blog, but it also incorporates never before seen authors and characters into the narrative of a single day at a very bookish coffee shop. Personas interact across the pages, making friends, sowing discord, all the while just trying to get their caffeine fix. Some people we’ve gotten requests for repeatedly over the two years this blog has existed finally give their Literary Starbucks orders in this book. All of this is not to mention the fantastic illustrations that complement the narrative, done by none other than New Yorker cover artist and cartoonist Harry Bliss.

We are so humbled and thrilled to be sharing this book with all of you, our fans and followers, without whom this work wouldn’t exist. So thank you, everyone who has ever read, followed, or shared this blog. We raise our coffee cups to you! Now go out there and keep reading. Hopefully our book! But more importantly, any books.

Love,

Jill, Nora, and Wilson

You can order the book HERE and HERE.

What it’s like to be slut-shamed when buying birth control

Even when pharmacists do let people access contraception, whether emergency contraception or condoms or prescription birth control pills, the process isn’t always free of judgment. In a series of recent online discussions, people across the country have begun to share stories of the stigma they’ve experienced. As many have pointed out, this can be especially damaging to teens.

DO YOU SEE THIS? PHARMACY EMPLOYEES IN THE U.S. ARE NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO DO THIS. THAT GOES FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE FRONT AS WELL AS PEOPLE IN WHITE COATS BEHIND THE CAGE.

If an employee in a pharmacy makes a snide comment - Front store workers, pharmacists, or Pharmacy Techs give you shit? Gently (Or not so gently) remind them that the waiver they signed upon being hired legally binds them from commenting on your purchase, as it is a violation of privacy laws. Doing so is grounds for INSTANT termination and hefty fines.

Pharmacy workers (white coats) are legally obligated to ASK if you need an explanation of how medication works and any side effects, any medication conflicts etc. If you decline, THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED AT ALL TO MAKE SNIDE REMARKS OR FARTHER COMMENT ON YOUR PURCHASE. FRONT STORE EMPLOYEES CAN NOT AT ALL COMMENT IN ANY WAY, IN ANY STORE WITH A PHARMACY IN IT.

Know your rights. If this shit happens? Call them the fuck out and ask to speak to a manager. Get worked up. Cause a scene. Threaten a Lawsuit. If you see this happening to someone else, and they seem to be struggling, speak up for them.

As a Pharmacy worker, you bet your ass I’ll protect you and your privacy. IT’S MY JOB.

Everybody has an opinion, but there is only type of professionality that is appropriate here.

Give them what they ask for.  Answer any questions they have about it.  the end.

pettyrevenge:

Years ago in my high school AP economics class I was assigned to sit in the corner of the room where I was flanked by a handful of very popular, very lazy kids. After every exam the teacher would announce (much to my chagrin) my “high score” to the class.

After a particularly challenging exam where I only scored 93%, the teacher announced that the guy to my right (let’s call him Matt) had ALSO scored 93%, his friend behind him 90%, and the friend behind HIM 90%! Needless to say I vacillated between self-doubt and suspicion for a few days before I finally “congratulated” one of the 90%‘ers on his score. With an impish grin he admitted that his friend Matt had been cheating off me for months and “thanked” me for helping “so many people do so well” in the class. The petty revenge gears started turning in my head for what seemed like ages before I replied “no problem, I’m just glad to help!”

At the next exam I put my my paper in very clear view of Matt. He had been told that I was now willing to “help” him and his friends. I circled all wrong answers while making a special mark for the correct ones. Just before the time was up, I quickly changed my answers back when nobody was looking, turned in my exam, and smugly walked back to my seat.

What I didn’t know at the time was that the cheating conspiracy didn’t just involve the kids sitting next to me, but that my answers were written down and forwarded to the next 4 periods, all of which took an identical test.

One week later a record 22 people failed the exam. Matt empathetically remarked “Oh man, did you fail too!?” I flipped over my sheet: 100%.

Nobody ever cheated off me in that class again.

Voters Just Kicked One of America’s Deadliest Prosecutors Out of Office:

lazyscience:

tpfnews:

Corey is widely known as one of the cruelest and deadliest prosecutors in America. She is infamous for vigorously prosecuting Marissa Alexander, a black woman who fired a warning shot into a wall during an altercation with her abusive husband. Under Florida’s stand-your-ground law, this action was perfectly legal—but Corey secured a 20-year jail sentence for Alexander, arguing that she fired the shot out of anger. A judge later overturned her conviction, ordered a retrial, and released Alexander; Corey has since fought to send her back to jail, alleging untruthfully that she had violated parole. Corey also hoped to secure a 60-year sentence for Alexander at her retrial.

Two years before the Alexander incident, Corey gained notoriety for ordering prosecutors to charge 12-year-old Cristian Fernandez as an adult for the murder of his younger half-brother. (Her best evidence was drawn from a “confession” of dubious constitutionality.) Fernandez was born to a 12-year-old mother whose boyfriend molested him. Another of his mother’s boyfriends shot himself in the head in Fernandez’s presence. By prosecuting Fernandez as an adult, Corey would have been able to hold him in an adult jail during trial, and secure a mandatory life sentence before Fernandez became a teenager. Pro bono counsel eventually intervened and negotiated a plea deal that allowed Fernandez to serve just a few years in juvenile jail. The attorney who secured that deal was Melissa Nelson, who just unseated Corey. (After the Fernandez incident, Corey continued threatening to charge juveniles as adults to coerce them into accepting harsh plea deals.)

During the span of her term, Corey sent far more people to death row than any other Florida prosecutor.  Most of these capital defendants were black men. She was unapologetic about her use of the death penalty; when one victim’s mother said she opposed capital punishment for her daughter’s killer, Corey declared on live radio that the mother was “more interested in publicity than actually grieving for her daughter.” Yet Corey was oddly lenient on several high-profile defendants accused of killing black men, including George Zimmerman. Corey avoided race entirely when prosecuting Zimmerman, who shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin. She was widely accused of botching the prosecution by overcharging Zimmerman.

Corey also employed a medical examiner who may have suffered from dementia. Her critics allegethat Corey continued to put the examiner on the stand to secure murder convictions after she became aware of his diminished mental state.

Florida voters also unseated prosecutor Jeff Ashton on Tuesday; he was defeated by a black woman whose husband previously served time in prison. Ashton was similarly known for his overzealous prosecutions of minorities, and for condoning an employee’s offensive Facebook rants. In 2014, Kenneth Lewis, one of Ashton’s assistant prosecutors wrote, “Happy Mother’s Day to all the crack hoes out there. It’s never too late to turn it around, tie your tubes, clean up your life and make difference to someone out there that deserves a better mother.” Lewis also posted a picture of Justice Sonia Sotomayor and wrote, “Reason enough why no country should ever engage in the practice of Affirmative Action again. This could be the result. Where would she be if she didn’t hit the quota lottery? Here’s a hint: ‘Would you like to supersize that sir?’ ”

When reporters asked Ashton about Lewis’ posts, he explained that “I do not police the private thoughts, views or expressions of those in my employ.” On Tuesday, Ashton lost his primary race by 14 points.

Over the last year, voters have also rejected exorbitantly retributive prosecutors in Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas. In Chicago and Cleveland, voters were especially irate that ostensibly “tough on crime” prosecutors seemed to target young black men while failing to charge, try, or convict police officers who shoot young black men. Replacing these prosecutors with reform candidates is a major goal of the Black Lives Matter movement. With the toppling of Corey, this campaign to unseat unjust prosecutors scored its biggest victory yet.

friends, THIS is why you need to care about your local elections as much as the national ones. Getting Angela Corey and Jeff Ashton out of office tangibly makes black and Latin@ people safer.
