The days pass, the fires continue to burn and burn and burn.

They lost a fireman today, down near San Diego - and I'm certain Doubledog Ranch where Spice has been boarded more than once or twice, is gone. A friend in the radio club, who just sold the two homes he and his new wife owned, so they could "retire" to Big Bear, have been evacuated - and likely, that house is gone as well.

I've gone through three house fires. It doesn't help that so many people are going to go through this together. It's just so much loss on such a huge scale. The mind can't get around it.

One of my oldest friends, who lives in Fontana, near Devore - is still MIA. None of his family that I can talk to online (one of his brothers is in Spokane and is always on MSN...) has spoken to him. I've tried calling the Red Cross, but unless I'm a blood relative - nothing more can be done to find them. I'll try to get that brother to place a call tomorrow. Nearly 30 years isn't enough, it seems.

Watching the news is heartbreaking. I have a permanent rasp - always seem on the verge of losing my voice. People with allergies at work are sneezing all day long.

I grew up in a town with an airport big enough to support Lear Jets - because they needed it for the fire equipment used to fight brush fires. It just seems like this has gotten away from them - is it possible there aren't enough resources? Were too many corners cut, not enough funding to prevent this?

There was a small quake in Simi Valley today as well. Insult to injury.

*sigh*

Quinces stink, BTW. I'll be glad when I can start cooking them up with some sugar and such and put them up as gifts for the holidays. I read in the histories that they were used as air fresheners/fragrancers and I believe it. Pungent is a good word for it. The confections I have in mind to make are all suggested for wine and cheeses - good sturdy types like blues, bries and hard aged cheeses. Take some of the quince confection, add a box of crackers, some two buck Chuck and a well-chosen selection from Whole Foods and a wonderful basket gift is made!

This weekend, we'll have our 2nd anniversary. I need to think of something really cool - on a skinny budget. Replacing Godzilla has drained us to the quick. There's already enough software for him to be glued to the stupid thing when it arrives - will have to be more resourceful.

My birthday is two weeks after that. I may have to pretend the computer is my birthday present. Whee.

I'm also going to have to trim down the friends list - I'm seeing the missing friends posts that [livejournal.com profile] shadesong reported some time ago - approach 500+ friends on your list, the friends list begins eating entries. At random.

Warning - if you haven't posted in a year where I can see it, off you go. That's the only criteria. And it's fair, say I.

Whether people are actively posting or not. Bah.

Helpful hint of the day - you want to keep a cat away from something, put some Tiger Balm on it. Better yet, leave an open can of it on top of it.

Today was spent yelling at people. Not my idea of fun.

I also signed up for SBC's inside wiring contract. I'm going to try to get someone out in a week or so and see if they notice I haven't had it for 30 days. Otherwise, I'll have to wait until then. It's just too nuts.

*Hugs* over the whole fire thing, and I hope your friend is alright.

On the lighter note: Tiger Balm will not work with all cats. My fluffy little Ryo-Ohki *loves* licking it off people. Well, she'll lick anything off people.. hair gel, lotions, and yep, tiger balm. She goes after the can of it too.

Weird lil critter, she is.

Tiger Balm, you say? Thanks for that tip, el Turdboy, as my kitten is sometimes known, loves to sleep on surge protectors. He also loves wires and is teething...

Bad luck just rains down on this state. Massive debt, the election fiasco and now massive fires? I wonder if the rest of the world is this troubled. I'm thinking about doing a purge of stuff to donate to fire victims... I heard back from my realtives, thank god. The fire in Fontana was 3 miles west of them last I heard, they'll have pictures if anyone wants one... I hope that's all they'll have, it'll be hard enough for their community as it is.

Ugh, things're a mess, everything's being snarky :pats: I hope it eases up for you!

i rather like the idea of it being called anti-Tiger Balm, because it repels cats.

i hope your friend is okay, and that he isn't MIA for much longer. i'm feeling so bad for everything that's happening in the world, it just adds to it. man, such destruction. but such is the way of nature, really.

Hey - do a support request on the problem? They might be more inclined to fix it if they know it's not affecting just one person.... my support request # is 135953.

Oh, it's a full-court press.

My DSL is provided by Megapath (hugs [livejournal.com profile] silverkun) and sourced by Covad. SBC is my phone service provider - and there are trouble tickets open everywhere except SBC, who are known to be total bastards.

I'm going to try later today to open a ticket for inside wiring and see if they can send someone before the contract is 30 days old. Wish me luck.
