Battlestar Galactica would have been totally kick-ass -- if it had been named something else, and the last remnants of the original idea had been stripped away. It's damn strong - gritty like a good Tom Clancy novel, stylish as Deep Space Nine and as immediate as a visit to the shipyards. It bears no resemblance to its foster parent except for the names of the characters, places and vessels. A PITY.

Fans of the old show are going to be unhappy because it's not their show. Anyone should be unhappy because this is a damn good work saddled with the legacy of Battlestar Bonanza. I don't know what people are thinking - was this the only way hard SF in the one hour dramatic format gets sold these days?

Rant over. Bah.

Or maybe not.

When I visited Canada, oh so long ago, I am still sorry I did not bring home more things with maple leaves on them. It's a beautiful flag -

Jeebus. Whoever that was complaining about it never met a Swiss - they are the flag wavers bar none. How good are they? Go check out the Matterhorn at Disney - all those little shields in the waiting area? Those are cantonal flags, and yes they are the current ones. I remember walking down the streets admiring the banners year round. If there was a pile of rocks that used to be a castle, it has a flash of red and white perched on it. Their flag is actually a square, not a rectangle - and the Swiss put it on everything. Everything, I tell you.

I tell you, there are Americans who are terribly ethnocentric, to the point of stupidity. You're only seeing a very good example of it, there. Whoever it was, here's your bitchslap for the day for making us all look bad. If you're from the South, two for good measure. Now here is your one-way ticket to the middle of nowhere - get home on your own, learn your importance in the world and learn appreciation for your country from a new vantage point. Bah.

I tell you. An American flag is one of the most attractive ones I can think of. Oh yeah - I was taught flag appreciation by a Swiss, d'oh. Cliff could pick out a flag and name the country faster than anyone I ever came in contact with - he could even do most of the African flags - pre and post colonial periods, mind. So I saw a lot of them.

Yesterday, I saw a lot of red, white and blue icicle lights at Stats. They couldn't give them away. (WTF?)

Jim got the lights outside working after talking with coworkers last night. You can only string three of those sections together - they have fuses in them now and they blow, who knew? - so I came home to find the house completely lit up and it's gorgeous.

I still had to do the floors myself, but oh well.

Bed now.

"If you're from the South, two for good measure."

I beg your pardon?

Somebody, not that long ago, advocated a bitchslap to any Southerner who did something so idiotic, it made the South look bad - something the media just pounced on and had too much fun with. I'd have to agree with that - frankly, there are a lot of very intelligent, rational folks out there who get washed with the "dummy" brush just because they don't reside above the Mason-Dixon line. Frankly, my favorite state right now for finding idiots is Indiana (no offense if you're from there, but you have my sympathies) - stuff like this, and this, and this.

It just jumps out at me. I can't help it. Indiana again?!

Important to draw the distinction between idiots and bigots. The former is passive, the latter is active. That first item likely has more to do with the fact that the KKK holds shop in Indiana, a fact I was blissfully unaware of until years after I left.

The drinking likely has more to do with the fact that they're teenagers....in Indiana. Farming states have a remarkably high rate of underage drinking and teenage pregnancy....due to the fact that there's nothing else to occupy them.

I am amazed by the amount of flags here in Switzerland, clothing and purses and such. But it just doesn't feel quite the same as the overflagness of the States does.

Then again, the States doesn't have purses with "Zurcherin" and "Baslerin" on them....(or New Yorker or Bostonian....).

Weird, weird place. But I do love the Swiss flag for its simplicity and its odd shape.

And doesn't it look great against the green of the landscapes?

Oh, re: the Canadian flag thing.

I'm Canadian, my mother told me about this the other day. Our conversation went a little like this:

"Oh, did you know, Americans are angry because Canadians are putting the Canadian flag on things?"
"Uh BUH? Haven't we always?"
"Yes, but now they think we're doing it because we don't want to be American."
"Which we never did want."
"Right. It's supposedly something about us not supporting President Bush..."
"Asshats."

Snort. Newsflash: Canadians have been putting their flags on stuff for years and years and years. Especially when we travel to other countries.

I feel an urge to make a new icon.
