I got my pancakes this morning, folks. I've been good to go all day. Once I finish with the housework this evening, I might indulge in some yogurt - maybe a sandwich.

I lurve pancakes.

Jim got to see his first pinata bashing yesterday, and he now knows why I won't do them. Think a dozen little boys (about 10-ish), add a couple of fierce little girls, one blindfold, one golf club (and we're talking about a #8 wood, here), the rope is made out of strips of sheeting braided together hung over the limb of a youngish tree (less than 20 years old) and some of these kids will risk anything for an Abba-Zabba.

You got it - two dashed at the first sign of candy drop and just about got brained.

And when the candy did drop, it was every kid for himself.

No way.

Today, five kids about the same age were jumping in and out of the beds of the three pickup trucks parked on the street two doors down, swinging sticks (looked like broomsticks and less) at each other. I'm not real comfortable with the backs of the pickup trucks to begin with (these are landscaping work trucks with tools and who knows what else in the beds), but the sticks being swung in anger (yeah, one kid got miffed at the other - matter of fact, he was a total pisswad with everyone) caught and kept my attention. It bears some watching. This is twice it's gotten my attention and kept it - three times, and I call a reasonable authority to come check my work.

It was Valentine's Day yesterday. Why, so it was. I gave Jim a radio-controlled Chevy Impala lowrider. He gave me a mp3 player. I'm making him some fudge tonight while he's at work. We don't do the chocolates, flowers and widdle red hearts schtick. Our first Valentine's Day, I got the DVD for the South Park movie and that has set the tone every since. Cliff ignored the holiday for 14 of the 15 years we were together.

So don't sweat it if you didn't get the hearts and roses. Anyone can get the hearts and roses - go buy them for yourself, you want them so bad. You'll find out quickly just how little thought really goes into such things - and they'll lose their attraction quickly.

I spent one Valentine's Day delivering flowers - it was a great way to make an extra $250 - and I saw first hand just how varied the response was to the silly things. And the stupid roses didn't smell like anything and cost a mint. *rolls eyes*

Make your own rules when it comes to romance. It ain't chocolate, and it ain't those stupid, scentless red plant bombs masquerading as roses. It's not being one of the haves vs. the have-nots.

And if you hate yourself, no romantic relationship is going to happen, let alone last.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] silverkun once told me he'd been asked to put his romantic wisdom into a book. We laughed and decided it could be done on one post-it note.

"Be yourself."

The only thing I could add would be a recommendation - "Be a person who's interested in other people - not a person who wants other people to be interested in them."

It seems to have worked for us.

Thank you! I really enjoyed your post! I agree with you with the whole making your own vday thing. I only got to see my bf for 3 hours yesterday but it was still awesome! I was so happy! I really like one of those lots of red stuff type of vdays. But for our anniversary and my bday, I told him not to buy me anything and that we should go somewhere instead. I like traveling and spending time with paul more than getting a gift from him. I wanted something to always be with me that paul gave me and he already bought me a nice bracelet so I just want to see him and be with him!

Thanks for writing such a thoughtful post! I think it helped a lot of people out! It was very sweet of you! I think you and uncle jimbo is the coolest!

Ohhhhhh its 5am here and now I want pancakes. NOW. I was sick today, so I deserve them.. hmm, wonder if I'll feel up to fixing some tomorrow?

""Be a person who's interested in other people - not a person who wants other people to be interested in them.""

Now that I like, and agree with. I cant understand it when one half of a couple dismisses the other's passions as dull, or when someone is so keen to talk about *their* stuff they don't even notice anything else going on.

Now, my brother thinks I'm joking when I tell him my husband forgot Valentine's, possibly because I'm not acting like a woman who's husband forgot Valentine's day, ie pissed off. But I *really* don't care. Flowers, at this time of year? They'll make him sneeze. And we'll have plenty of that when the baby comes anyway. Flowers from other people, making him sneeze, that is, I don't think he's going to be allergic to the baby ... Chocolates? He'd end up eating them himself, I mean, I like chocolate, but I don't like it as quickly as he does. Widdle red hearts and wuv oo fluffy toys? What a waste of money and space. I get my *white* roses in December, our wedding flowers for our wedding anniversary, when they mean something to us (and don't make him sneeze). I have a man who talks to our unborn child. And when it's born, and I'm in hospital needing some hideous item like sanitary towels or breast pads, he'll go out and buy them for me without a blush or a whine. No, it's not romantic, it's built of sterner stuff than that. But that's more like what it takes.

Oh, I do like this sentiment! Yes, it's called love, commitment and maturity, and it beats romance into the ground.
