One of these days -

I'll unpack the doll collection. The one I've had since I was wee - put together of my own volition, and added to all of my life. I even have a set of fashion dolls I picked out of the selections back in 1993, and redressed as Quantum Leap characters. Yes, I'm a goof. But you knew that.
I have dolls I picked up on travel, dolls that people brought back for me - dolls I've made, dolls I played with. Oh, and some are still dressed in the clothes I made for them. When you're a kid in a single parent family with three other siblings, ready-made Barbie doll clothes are not to be come by. I made the most incredible things with paper towels and bathroom tissue you ever saw. And then, old enough to use the sewing machine, I made better ones out of fabric. I remember taking old sheeting Mom had tossed out for rags, and coloring it with iron-in crayons and then using the fabric for doll clothes. That doll is still in storage.
But there's never been room for a display case.
nytshaed has the best showcase solution I've ever seen, but she got lucky to get it. Me? Neither the space or the luck. Bother. I really need a hutch too. I'm using an old bookcase right now -
I still love my dolls. Volks has opened a showroom somewhere in Torrance - hell if I know where. I suspect that will be my Christmas present to myself - soon, I hope. (Great, another hole to pour money into. But. They're. So. CUTE. AUGH.)
It does explain why Sims2 has grown so quickly on me, though. You choose, configure and dress - electronically, to be sure, but that's the basic premise (remember, the working title for the original game was Electronic Dollhouse). But in the Sims2 case? Your dolls come to life.
Don't believe me? With a little bit of work (okay, more than a little), some imagination and patience - instant graphic novel. Somewhat. Sideways.
I wish I had the patience to stop and take the right pictures - I have more than a couple of Sims with stories now that would be worth reading. And I'm flatly surprised every time - Hey, I made you to give hunky-boy over there a family tree...you aren't supposed to steal the show, you old coot! BLAST.
Like in any creative endeavor, your characters often have other ideas. :)
But then again, my dolls always had the best adventures!
