Gotta love Google News -
Apr. 15th, 2004 03:17 pmI've seen this story reported all over the world. I know the location well - I learned to drive out there.
unclejimbo and I refer to it as suicide alley for all the dipshits who want to buzz through there at 90 MPH. It's two lanes, either way with a cement divider - and no services outside of the call boxes along the side of the road. The terrain is badlands, with nothing taller than your ankle growing there. Straight up, straight down and you can't see anything from the road while you're driving through. Forget using your cell phone. You is screwed.
And you just left a metropolitan center of over a million. It's hard to believe, but it's indicative of the attitude out there. You're stupid, you're unlucky, you're done. Thanks for playing.
For more references, if you've got Animal Planet or Discovery Channel and you can see "Venom ER" - that's where I grew up. Loma Linda University Medical Center is one of the very best hospitals I've ever dealt with - second only to Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. I've spent months, probably years cumulatively in that place.
Kind of spooky seeing the old neighborhoods, really.

Date: 2004-04-15 03:43 pm (UTC)My wife refuses to drive that for a reason -- the dipshits who drive the thing at 90 mph and scare the bejeezus out of her. I don't blame her at all.
Nowadays when going from Arizona to Menifee, we take the 79 south from Beaumont to Hemet, which cuts the travel time significantly and bypasses that portion of the 60 entirely. It's still a bit hairy though especially when there's idiots going 90 and approaching the stop light at Lamb Canyon Rd for the landfill!
Also, it's quicker to go to Hemet and travel south via Winchester Road, than travel all the way to the 215 then south.

Date: 2004-04-15 04:04 pm (UTC)Lamb's Canyon used to be the biggest death trap around - head ons while u wait. It's much nicer now, but I used to hate driving through there. Did you drive it when there was still a flashing light at the Gilman Hot Springs intersection? It's now an overpass - and there's a bridge over the San Jacinto river. That used to wash out just about every year and they'd close Sanderson - remember?
Quicker to go through Hemet - via Winchester Road. Since they closed the best part of it and put a resevoir on top of it, that poor road has seen so much more congestion as of late. Ever go through Anza-Borego instead? You come out on State Street -
I was born and raised in Hemet. I was expecting to hear that the location was on "old 60" - otherwise known as Gilman Hot Springs road, but nope - right off the 60 in that narsty piece between Moreno Valley and Beaumont.
Poor, poor family. That woman had 6 children - did you catch that?

Yeah, Lamb's Canyon is STILL hairy. I remember the Gilman Springs Road flashing light from the first time I went, before I was a driver (not really so long ago because I'm young).
Riverside County might as well be a second home to me -- while I've never lived there, I was married there, and spent much of my childhood visiting family in the area. (Ironically, we had to go to San Marcos in San Diego County to pick up the marriage certificate -- we saved something like $30 on a fifteen minute drive.)

And I met you on the internet - that ought to make people wonder!
