I really don't mind going to see my mother for Mother's Day in Hemet. I really don't.

However. I think I've spent most of today driving. And managing the drive has taken at least four hours alone.

I picked up a rental car yesterday afternoon after Jim went to work. I drove this morning for about three hours total to get out there, go to the market to get the goods to make lunch - and then went to Mom's house and began cooking. I was ready for the troops when they arrived at 1:00 PM with grilled cheese sandwiches (really felt like calling myself 625 there for a while), grilled peanut butter and honey sandwiches, tomato rice soup, cottage cheese and pineapple salad, potato salad - and Sis brought dessert.

Then after visiting, and such - drove back home about 5:00 PM, discovering I had left my keys at home. I got a call enroute - Jim had left his cell phone at home.

Getting home, I discovered how frighteningly easy it was to get into the house without keys. But I got keys, got Jim's phone and got on the road to turn the car back in.

I've just got back from turning the car in. Can I please stop driving now? I'd like to go soak and relax a bit - dealing with my family stresses me out on the best of days, and I can't say this was one of them.

For one, I really hate having to shout to get a word in edgewise. For another, I really do have a clue about what is being talked about - so quit interrupting me. Bah!

High points: Helping my great-nephew (my niece's son) and my niece (my sister's girl) plant zinnias. Pictures were taken - they are teh cute.

Low points: Specified above, and getting grilled over the coals because the family dog got cheese snackies. Good grief. Mom has my 10-year old great-nephew over on a regular basis and nothing hits the ground? My younger brother is coming close to being an asshole - I just mentally took a step back and wondered why he was being such as ass to begin with. Must be something in the water.

Also, out of the clear blue -

"Aunt Donna! Did you see that show the other day with the guy in the big red coat?!" (This is my great-nephew Alex again, BTW. 10 years old.)

"What, Trigun?" (Oh yeah, someone said they were running it again...)

"YEAH! I got to see him shoot a really big gnarly gun thing -"

"Yeah, he drilled a hole in a moon, right?"

"Yeah!"

"That was a really big episode for you, wasn't it?" (I'm remembering the episode and wincing a bit. He's only 10.)

The eyes got a bit wider. And the voice got softer. "Yeah, it was."

"Tell you what, kiddo. You want to come over and see it all in order, you just come to my house. I've got it all on DVD."

It's hard to render Alex silent. That managed the job.

"Oh Aunt Donna, you're the coolest."

We decided that when the new Harry Potter movie comes out, he's going to come in to see it with his (oh hells) second cousin (?). And Jim, most likely. We'll have him overnight. He'll get to see it, uncut and hopefully, curled up next to me or Jim.

Alex also thought the tomato rice soup out of the can from Campbells was "banging."

It would have been nice to have had dinner with Jim tonight - it would. Except I'm back in the truck and thinking about driving another two hours just doesn't float my boat. Total sentient hours spent together in the last 48 - 4.

Mom is planning a trip back to Harlan, IA this June - and she wants me to go with. Which is to expected - Mom is the genealogist, I'm her apprentice. And I've wanted to go back and see where she grew up, I've heard so much about it. Take a Friday and a Monday off. Gotta talk to Jim - I think that's the weekend [livejournal.com profile] cool2alltheway is coming in for her week with us. It might work out in that it will give them a chance to visit with each other while I'm gone. I just don't think I'm going to get many more chances like this to make this kind of trip, yanno?

I've also let drop that I want to do a family reunion for her 80th birthday next year. The two things dovetail nicely.

And I'm out of things to string together - I'll remember more later, I'm sure. I have traversed the 91 today, after all - from beginning to end. I live another day!

This is a genius child at 10. And you are a very, very cool Aunt. :D

I should lend Trigun to my nephew next time I see him. I've already corrupted him with exposed him to other anime...
