How to recover a Marine.
One of my favorite memories was the one night a friend and I found a vanload of Marines from Twenty-Nine Palms trying to find their way with a topo map to Camp Pendleton....heading for Idyllwild in Hemet.
That's due East, when you need to be going South. If they kept trying that direction, they'd get right back to where they had started from, after going up and down a really big hill. REALLY big. Biggest one around, outside of San Gorgonio.
We found them nearly at the foot of it, totally baffled.
We gave them directions, pointed them the right way....and found them heading right back to Idyllwild half a hour later.
At that point, we put them on our bumper, told them to stay there, and we took them out to old Hwy 395 and drove them through Perris - and told them to keep going, and Godspeed.
Go ahead, be as fierce and narsty as you wanna be. You were a nineteen-year-old dork once. I've seen it.
