So, are those boots actually Starfleet-issue or just something they picked up along the way? Because just look at those high heels.
in keeping with trek’s naval origins (bosun’s whistle! yeomans! boldly going!), the boots and pants resemble naval uniforms– moreso Royal Canadian Navy than American WWII oddly enough. Heeled boots were standard military issue.
That being said, those are some next level heels…
@greenjimkirk another reason for heels is that mounted cavalry was the original…and heels are required so your foot doesnt slip thru the stirrup and get stuck. same for navy- a lot of safety stuff has changed so they wear more standard safety boots iirc. but heels prevent ur foot from slipping thru stair steps, esp those spiky corrugated(?) steel steps common in industrial applications. for example the Jeffries tubes all have metal stepped ladders and if your leg fell thru and behind it would be a DISASTER.
those types of boots also slide thru mud if the toe is low grip. also silty soil etc way better than many all purpose hiking boots and the heel keeps you above the worst of the muck (similar to cowboy boots) and can be used to get a good toehold while the heel gets traction.
The reports filed during the making of the show said these were custom jobs, they were awful to wear as they fell apart, poking you with the nails coming through the innersoles. William Theiss, the costume designer, might have been a total mutant genius but he didn’t even have Velcro to work with.
