Lupus is an autoimmune disease. When a person has one of those diseases, their own immune system attacks various parts of their bodies.

Autoimmune diseases can run in families, but two members of the same family can have different diseases. For instance, I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Autoimmune Hepatitis. My mom has Reynaud's Syndrome and my sister has Polyarteritis nodosa.

How much information do you have on Hashimoto's Thyroiditis? I have a friend who has it and she is on synthroid right now...

I think she is looking to learn more about it, and I at the very least would like to figure out what the hell it is.

Hashimoto's is a disease where a person's immune system starts attacking the thyroid as if it were an invading germ.

Because the immune system's attacks are not constant, the level of thyroid hormones the thyroid produces varies, so a person with Hashimoto's should be tested for thyroid hormone levels periodically and the synthroid dose adjusted.

If a person does not take the synthroid, they start feeling tired, have skin and hair problems, can have short-and long-term memory loss, have problems with concentration and, if left untreated for a long time, can go into a coma.
