Got home, checked email - a notice from the neighborhood group is in the box:

Hello Everyone,

We have had several incidents reported that cats are being poisoned by antifreeze. So far the areas affected are 208th & Raymond, Doble and Levinson.

I called Animal Control and they told me that rather than it being one person doing this is was more likely the time of year. People are doing maintenance on their vehicles and probably don't realize how deadly antifreeze can be to an animal.

Ralph wasn't the only one. To have that large an area affected? At least four reported cases - probably more.

I don't know how I could have missed it for so long. And I am again reminded how incredibly bright it was of me to insist our cats remain indoor pets.

They are fat, happy and unlikely to ever encounter anything like this. And no, I did not pick them up and hug them senseless.

I split a can of Fancy Feast between them. Leftovers cleaned up by the dog.

Next week? I make a flyer in both English and Spanish for distribution. This is NUTS.

Anti-freeze manufacturers have known about this FOREVAR. So why don't the make it taste bad?

I did mush my kitties so hard they thought I was trying to much them together and make one good one. My kitties are not allowed outside and every time I see road kill I cry and mush my kitties.

When I was poor, I had an old car that leaked anti-freeze every time I shut it off. I had a plastic jug mounted under the hood with a tube to catch the leak to so I could pour it back in the radiator because I cared. I don't think most people actually care about things like that.

Most people just don't know about this. I used water, back in the old days - couldn't afford the stuff.

*shakes head* Nobody would be careless if they knew. I'm sure of it.

Bad taste additives (which some states have tried to mandate) won't stop an animal from taking the first "exploratory" sip - which to a small animal, is plenty to kill.

There's a brand called Sierra which is non-poisonous.

People just don't think sometimes...

And indoor cats can be a good thing. Mine was. Too many bad things to run into outside, between various diseases, cars, antifreeze...
