I've actually noticed the change here in TN, at least in my area.

Please forgive my total ignorance here, as I have a hard time following US politics (it doesn't help that green card holders can't vote and US vs. Canadian politics is like water vs. balsamic vinegar), but what happens in 2006?

Mid-term elections for the entire House of Representatives, and roughly 1/3 the senate.

Historically they go badly for the party of the sitting president.

Yay for some hopeful signs.

I was recently in the Ozarks (mostly southern Missouri, although we dodged across into Arkansas a few times), and I expected to see a lot of pro-Republican "patriotism" and so on.

What I did see was a hell of a lot of "Support our troops", yellow ribbons, "pray our troops come home safely" things, and shirts supporting a relative in the armed forces - but not a lot of specifically pro-administration stuff. And a lot fewer US flags than I expected, too. It was an interesting divide.

Here's hoping. Now if the Democrats can just mount a candidate who isn't a guaranteed loser... heck, there are some Republican potential opposition candidates making noise; I saw an article about some Republican US senator and potential candidate for the presidency criticizing the administration's Iraq policy/lack of exit strategy pretty sharply.

Quack, quack.

That's comforting

... But I'll be stuck in Jesusland until either the rapture actually starts happening, or the husband finishes his PhD.

As they say around these parts, voting democrat is like paddling against the current of the rapids in a bucket with a hole on the bottom. =[

Not very accurate considering there is no presidential election now and an assumption that Kerry would be the choice of people still if had to choose betweent the two. In the end, this map is meaningless, because it has little value in the 2006 elections. Remember that the House of Representives litterly have broken states apart so they have majority parties in there districts, and only 1/3 of the Senate is up, which usually doesn't change suddenly.

I hate to douse water on the parade here, but in the end... being it's the Summer of 2005 and not the Summer of 2006, this is just wishful thinking.

Ah, but this is a little crack fantasy - I can still think Dean is in the running, can't I?

I just got drift of being_homeless having a CSF fluid leak.

I've had a migrane for a year because of one. It's a really complicated situation to explain, but i heard of her through one of my lj-friends, Rabid_Mexican.

I know what they feel like. It's one of the most degrading and torturous feelings in the world.
Her LJ won't take comments, but tell her some stranger who's had a CSF-leak said hi, and i hope to all ends she gets better soon. :\

US House districts are decided at the state level either by members of the state legislature or Apportionment Boards, which may or may not include state legislators. Regardless of who makes the decisions, it is strictly a state issue, which is why it was such a big deal that Tom DeLay was so heavily involved in the recent Texas reapportionment.

Iowa currently has a system where the districts are setup by a non-partisan board who are mandated to make the districts as contiguous as possible. Ohio, who's closest Congressional race in 2004 was won by 17 points, has a ballot issue this November where we will get the same system if passed. Schwarzenegger is pushing for a similar initiative in California.

Kerry has nothing to do with the accuracy of the map. All it shows is how the states voted for Bush and what their opinion of him is now. It is strictly historical and does not attempt to make any interpretation of the data. That is entirely up to the viewer.

The GOP is on the ropes right now, especially here in Ohio. My own Congresswoman, Deb Pryce, who is the Chair of the House Republican Conference, told the Columbus Dispatch that she has never seen the GOP in so much trouble. 2006 is there for the Democrats to take; it all depends on if the national leadership takes the DLC "Republican-Lite" approach (which has consistently failed miserably) or the Paul Hackett "Let's bust some heads" attitude.

The whole Daily Show makes me *facepalm*, in all honesty.

Heh. It's my little crack fantasy, and if I want Dean to show both backbone AND brains, it'll all come together...somehow.
