The squirrel is so so SO RIGHT. Kinda funny, I was just mentioning that to Mum the other day while we were watching TV. 'Why is he just reporting about this? Why can't he go... I dunno, help?'

I totally agree. I couldn't understand why the hell someone was 'shooting' at the very people that are trying to help. Grr.

The one I couldn't get over was the reporter that was ANGRY with the police officer who didn't stop and talk to him.

That... and "CNN exclusive: Police unable to aid sick woman"!

It really is sad when something as rational and logical as this has to come from a cartoon squirrel.

That was the first thing to make me laugh in 3 days when my friend showed it to me last night. So, so true.

Only problem I have is with the "looter bashing."

Fuck, let them loot. Looting stores which are destroyed anyway doesn't do any harm, and frankly, anything that was left behind is lost now. The owners of those stores aren't going to come back in 2 or 3 weeks and go "oh, thank god, all our bread and diapers are still here!"

Property is less important to me than people.

I think the point wasn't "looting is bad" but rather "if you're going to be out there doing something, start by helping some of the other people who desperately need it before worrying about how much crap you can grab for yourself"

Which is a valid point, IMHO.

I agree with most of it - I was watching the reporters last night and thinking why don't they load up on water and pass it out to those poor dehyrdated people, at least? But look at it this way, if there weren't reporters there, you wouldn't know what was going on. Would people prefer not to know? If it weren't for the satellites on those news trucks all over the Gulf, we wouldn't have the images. And who's to say no one there is helping? I have seen reporters helping. They're giving voice to the survivors, they're telling those of us who are not there, and are worried about loved ones, and simply filled with compassion for total strangers, what's going on, as it goes on. They are performing a service, as overblown as it often seems. They're under a lot of stress too, which Foamy does not seem to recognize. That squirrel is understandably angry, but not necessarily justifiably.

My cat Norma does NOT like Foamy's voice at all.

Oh yeah, that was Shep Smith on FOX, he is the one who reported, FALSELY, that martial law had been declared, Tuesday morning. He's a yutz.

What a lot of people are failing to understand is the people in that water have no communication with the world, or even their city officials. They don't know the scope of the devastation. They haven't seen the aerial shots, they don't know how many people are on rooftops needing rescuing. They know power is out and downtown is a free for all, so they take what they want. Let them. Maybe if they KNEW exactly what was going on, they'd help those who need help. Imagine, they haven't seen the TV, they haven't read a newspaper, they can't get online and read news articles and blogs. Ya know?

It doesn't excuse the anarchy, I know, and I can't imagine why someone shot at a military 'copter offering aid, but I can't imagine being so cut off from any communication. Some people are no doubt helping themselves because they're confused and cut off. I think maybe if they knew the breadth of the situation, and the dire need for assistance, they might actually help instead. None of us second guessing has ever been in their situation, so how do we know, really?

Foamy the Squirrel is angry, I get that. :) A lot of people are, myself included.

I agree with a lot of it, but perhaps the anger should be aimed more at the government for cutting funding for the levy system, and to the big Shrub, who finds vacationing more important than flying down to Louisiana to pitch in a hand. Just a thought. Really, I am very angry with the government right now. Apparently, Louisiana has appealed so many times to get the levy system fixed, because it was in bad shape to begin with. They asked for 70 million, and received 10 to fix things. Who gets funding instead? Some random island of 50 in Alaska, which will be getting a 250 million dollar bridge to connect them to the mainland. 250 million? Because the senator who asked for the money has been in office for like 30 years or something. And yet we see what 10 million did for us in Louisiana. Nothing.

Steps off the soap box now.

I love Foamy. I just showed him to my DH for the first time. He also loves Foamy now.

I hope Foamy rants on the gas 'crisis' next.

The worse part is that those who have skills that can save lives are blocked from going to the survivors.

"FEMA is dealing with it!" the groups say. I'm not the only person who wants to offer their services to the survivors FOR FREE. On the official Hurricane Katrina boards, there are other medical personnel that are also stopped from helping out.

It pisses me off that Seattle, WA, sent only 4 dinky groups each made up of 3-5 medical professionals. They don't even want to send any more!
