How do you figure they're out after only one game? Granted, I haven't been keeping track of what each individual group looks like, and come to think of it, the Czechs are good, the Italians are usually okay even when their team is supposed to suck (we haven't really had a great team since '94, when we wuz robbed by Brazil won)... Wait, uh, nevermind.
There really is no reason to believe the US is out.
It will require a good deal of work, but with Italy and the Czech Republic each with three points apiece, the US will have to beat both Italy and Ghana to be guaranteed a pass through pool play. Short of the that, one win, one loss and one tie will then require a point differential basis and if the US is capable of outscoring Ghana significantly (which is wholly possible) and possessing at least three goals against Italy, they will be nearly guaranteed a pass through the pool.
In the best case scneario, the Czechs will sweep the pool and force a loss for Ghana, Italy, and the US, which will guarantee a pass to whoever then scores two wins and 6 points.
I'm not going to pass judgement on the team, standing stats or not, of whether or not the US is in or out.
World Cup seeding rankings were base don numbers, and intended to avoid having powerhouse teams play each other early in the tournament, but yet based on the most recent FIFA2006 rankings, the Czechs are 2 and US 5 in the world. Which negates the intention of not having powerhouse teams play each other. At least three pools in the cup are extremely tough due to the teams all being strong, which also indicates the "standing stats" are not something to be relied on.
I'll wait for pool play to be over before I decide.
So far, the only team to disappoint, in my opinion, has been England. It's wholly based on one match, which is hypocritical, but given England's shoddy history in the lst handful of world cups, and the lackluster showing in their opening match, I don't expect good things out of the team.
well having been in Germany when they played, and won their first game.. man was that loud. (I saw it in a German University lecture hall FULL of Students) And being in Switzerland last night when they tied?? 0/0, though the swiss certainly made alot of noise about it. you would have thought they won by 5 points.. *sigh* ..
I am getting more interested in it, simply hard to avoid while over here. Most of the games are screened on big outdoor screens. Lots of crowds, beer, and screaming.
