A couple of hot weather notes -
Jul. 25th, 2006 10:38 amFrozen Luna Bars are teh tasty.
Last night? I took a nightshirt out of the press, soaked it in ice cold water and wore it for a couple of hours sitting at the computer. Since both of our machines are at windows with fans sitting in them, this worked remarkably well. Chilly, even. (Ice cold wet shirt? whooHOOHOOhooo!) It was dry when I took it off to sleep.
The most unexpected fun part? I turned the sprinklers on in the front yard when I got home from work yesterday afternoon. Everything so hot, nothing was moving - very quiet.
Sprinklers went on - and....
There's a sidewalk in front of my house. Full blast, the sprinklers cover it and hits the median strip a bit. Water pools in the curb cut of the driveway.
I instantly had kids on bikes riding through the sprinklers. Toddler screaming is one thing - kid squeeing over cold water on a hot day is something quite different. Soon, I had four year olds in their underoos squealing and dancing around in the spray. Now, I sort of kept one eye on them because cement+water=slippery, but they did okay until they got called in for dinner, dripping wet.
The birds took turns dunking themselves in the driveway puddle. Inside of fifteen minutes of turning those sprinklers on.
And the micro-mister effect did wonders for air I pushed into the house to cool it from the front windows. Dinner was what I could grill on the George Foreman, and it kept the rest of the house from getting even hotter. Somehow, we'll manage. Jim is pushing for the A/C solution our contractor was suggesting - but there's just too much on the docket ahead of creature comforts like that, frankly. It'll be five years before I can think about it. It does require getting into a cooler place to remember that, but so it goes.
Just keep thinking - and adjusting. Complaining about what can't be changed is pointless.

Date: 2006-07-25 09:58 pm (UTC)The state of CA suggests setting the stat no less than 78 degrees. Still cool enough for work, but without overloading the LA power grids.
