Equal Time -

ARLINGTON, Va. — It took a second or two for Jaimen Ortiz to fully comprehend what he was seeing: two toddlers playing in an open second-floor window, and one of them hanging from the window sill.

So Ortiz hopped a fence and ran to the apartment building. Just as he got there, the 2-year-old girl fell, screaming. Ortiz put out his arms and caught her cleanly, perhaps saving her life and certainly preventing serious injury.

Now, I'm posting this to point out a couple of things.

One, both the Good Guy and the Bad Guys...were guys. The mother, wife, whathaveyou - not even mentioned. Good, bad or indifferent. Not part of the problem. Me likes that.

Two, it proves my point - good parents come in both genders. Bad parents come in both genders.

*smiles* It looks like he's no stranger to being a Good Guy - and he looks like a recent "immigrant."

Yeah, like this country doesn't need anyone like this guy. I'm going to drop the County Board a note asking them to follow Ortiz until he's granted his citizenship - the atta boy at that point would be well earned.

It was getting discussed this morning on the Craigslist parenting forum. The first comment after the link got posted was along the lines of, "He's a HOT hero!"

Wow. Way to go, Ortiz! We definitely need more people like him in the world. We're so used to minding our own business, that we miss a lot around us. Thanks for sharing this story. It restores my faith in humanity.
